PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated the College of Charleston in strong fashion on Friday night with a 3-0 victory over the Cougars. The shutout marks keeper Christiana Ogunsami's eighth of the year, which is now just two shy of the single-season program record.
The Dragons got an early start as Vanessa Kara found the goal in the fifth minute. Joanna Seca made a strong attempt that was deflected by Charleston keeper Lauren Killian, but Kara was able to quickly find the rebound and put it back into the bottom left corner for her fifth goal of the season. The Dragons maintained a 1-0 lead until the 27th minute, when freshman Laura Hamilton put Drexel ahead 2-0 with the first goal of her career. An outside back, Hamilton found herself up the field with a look at the net and fired from inside the outer box. Drexel would continue to hold the Cougars scoreless through the first half and would head into halftime with a two-goal lead.
Halfway through the second period, Kylie Strong helped to solidify a Dragons' victory with her first goal of the season. Shaelyn McCarty sent a cross into Strong, who redirected the ball into the net from six yards out. Trailing 3-0, the Cougars would be unable to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created in the time remaining in regulation.
The Dragons outshot the Cougars, 13-11. Ogunsami totaled four saves on the night for Drexel, while Killian recorded seven for Charleston.
With the win, Drexel improves to 8-5-1 overall and 4-1 in conference action. The Cougars move to 8-5-1, 1-2-1 CAA.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday as they welcome UNCW to Vidas Field for Alumni Day. The game is slated to begin at noon.
