NEWARK, Del. – The No. 4 seeded Drexel field hockey team (8-11) ended its season in the semifinal game at the CAA Championship in Newark, Del. to the No. 1 seeded and No. 9 nationally-ranked Delaware Blue Hens (17-3) from Rullo Stadium by a final of 6-1.
Delaware scored three first-half goals and added another three in the second half to end Drexel's season as the Dragons only managed a late second-half score.
After earning three corners and maintaining offensive possession early in the contest, Delaware's CAA Player of the Year Greta Nauck scored the first goal to give the Blue Hens a 1-0 lead in the 9th minute as she took the ball through the circle for a close-range shot. Taylor Lister lead her with a pass from just outside the circle.
In the 21st minute, the Dragon earned their first corner. Sophomore Delaney Baxendale took the shot after fellow sophomore Katie Bagdon stopped it at the top of the circle, but the shot went wide.
Delaware countered as the Blue Hens added a second goal in the same minute when Lisa Giezeman beat Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist on a breakaway. Giezeman made a move to get past Gilchrist before Michaele Scanlon scored the goal, 2-0.
Delaware's Nauck grabbed her second goal of the game in the 31st minute to give the Blue Hens a 3-0 lead heading into the half. Drexel senior Idrienne Walker had a scoring chance in the final minute of the half at the goal line but Delaware goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans wedged herself on the post to make the save.
Delaware scored twice in two minutes in the early stages of the second half. Lister made a crossing pass through the circle to Delaware's Esmee Peet in the 39th minute for a score before Nauck completed her hat trick in the 41st minute.
Sophomore Megan Wiest had another good look for Drexel before Delaware scored its fifth goal but her shot was stopped on a defensive save by a Blue Hen defender.
The Blue Hens' Scanlon scored her second goal of the affair in the 52nd minute as Lister notched her third assist on the day, 6-0. Redshirt sophomore Kathryn Boyce relieved Gilchrist in the Drexel cage with 18:47 to play.
The Dragons scored a late goal as senior Jessica McCarthy, an All-CAA First Team selection, put in her 21st career and final collegiate goal in the 64th minute on Drexel's second penalty corner. Freshman Tess Horan, a CAA All-Rookie Team honoree, and sophomore Katie Bagdon, a CAA All-Academic Team selection, earned assists on the play.
Drexel was outshot 24-6 including 12-3 on goal while Delaware also lead corners, 9-3.
The loss ended the Dragons' 2016 season.
