LINCOLN, Neb. - The Drexel wrestling team earned wins over No. 25 Princeton and Michigan State on Saturday at the Nebraska Duals. The Dragons defeated the nationally ranked Tigers, 17-15 in their first dual of the day. In their next matchup, the squad fell to its hosts, No. 7 Nebraska, by a 33-4 deficit. The Dragons went on to close out the day with a 25-9 victory over Michigan State to help them improve to 6-1 in dual competition on the season.
Zack Fuentes started the day off for the Dragons with a 7-1 decision over Princeton's Mateo DeVincenzo at 125. No. 14 Kevin Devoy Jr. followed with a win over the Tigers' Pat D'Arcy at 133 to put Drexel ahead, 6-0 early. In the 141 match, David Pearce fell to No. 4 Matthew Kolodzik by an 8-3 margin and then the Tigers were able to tie things up as No. 18 Jordan Laster edged out No. 11 Matthew Cimato at 149.
With the score even, Willie Davis picked up a win over Princeton's Leondard Merkin at 157 and then Austin Rose put the Dragons ahead, 13-6 with a major decision at 165. The Tigers were able to cut the lead to four points as No. 16 Jonathan Schleifer overcame Ebed Jarrell, 10-8, in the 174 match. However, Alex DeCiantis came back with a 17-6 major decision over Kevin Parker at 184 that ultimately cemented a Drexel victory. Princeton took wins in the last two matches, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Dragons had created.
Drexel's match-up with the seventh-ranked Nebraska squad proved tough, as the Huskers took all but one of the 10 matches on their way to victory. No. 11 Matthew Cimato was the lone Dragon to pick up a win against the Huskers, as he earned a major decision over Jordan Shearer in the 149 match. Devoy was able to hold No. 4 Eric Montoya to a two-point advantage at 133 and Nick Elmer took No. 17 Micah Barnes to sudden victory at 174, but neither one was able to emerge victorious. The Huskers went on to defeat the Dragons by a final score of 33-4.
In their final dual of the day, the Dragons took seven matches from the Spartans on their way to their sixth victory of the season. Fuentes started things off with a 5-3 win over Mitch Rogaliner at 125, and Devoy followed with a major decision against Austin Eicher at 133. Pearce picked up a win-by-fall over Logan Griffin under three minutes into the 141 match, and then Cimato picked up a 2-0 decision at 149 to increase Drexel's lead to 16-0 four matches in.
Michigan State took the 157 and 165 matches with wins from Austin Thompson and Drew Hughes, but then Jarrell came back with a 8-1 decision at 174 to put Drexel ahead, 19-6. DeCiantis increased the Dragons' advantage to 22-6 with a 6-3 victory over Shwan Shadaia in the 184 match. The Spartans' Matthew Okaiye was able to secure a win at 197, but Joey Goodhart finished things off with a victory in the heavyweight match to lead the Dragons onto their second dual meet win of the day.
Next up, the Dragons are set to open their home schedule on Saturday, December 10 as they host EIWA opponent Columbia in their only home dual meet of 2016. Matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.
