PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Union have signed former Drexel star Ken Tribbett, a defender who most recently played for Bethlehem Steel FC, the club announced on Tuesday. Tribbett was originally signed this offseason by the Union affiliate and USL expansion club and will become the first player to join the UNion via that mechanism.
Tribbett, a 24-year-old center back who was a midfielder while at Drexel, helped the Dragons to a pair of CAA championships and NCAA Tournament appearances during his last two seasons in University City. He was a four-time All-CAA selection, including a First Team choice as a senior in 2013. That year, Drexel captured its second-consecutive CAA regular season title, and won its first-ever CAA Tournament championship. Tribbett was named the Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Year as a senior and was an All-CAA Tournament selection after the Dragons' victory. Tribbett also earned All-South Atlantic region recognition from the NSCAA following that senior year. In the department, Tribbett was recognized as a recipient of the John Semanik Award, given each year to the top male student-athlete at Drexel.
Last season, Tribbett played for the Harrisburg City Islanders, starting 28 matches and scoring three goals in his first professional season. Prior to that, Tribbett played in PDL for the Michigan Bucks in 2014. He was an original signee for Bethlehem Steel FC, but was on trial with the Union throughout the 2016 preseason.
Tribbett joins Jeff Parke, who played for the Dragons from 2000-03, as the only Drexel men's soccer alumni to sign with a Major League Soccer team. Parke played for four different clubs over 10 years in MLS, most recently with DC United in 2014. Parke also played for the Union in 2013.
