Men’s Swimming Finishes Second at CAA Championships, Berryman Named Swimmer of the Meet

RICHMOND, Va. - The Drexel men's swimming team finished in second place at the 2016 CAA Championships from Richmond, Va. Senior Joel Berryman was named the Men's Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet as he won three individual gold medals in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back. He becomes the first Dragon to be named Swimmer of the Meet for the CAA Championships.
THE FIELD AFTER DAY FOUR OF FOUR
William & Mary won the Championships with 969.5 points followed by Drexel (572), Towson (533), Delaware (502) and UNCW (429.5). It was the best finish for Drexel at the conference cahmpionships since joining the CAA.
BERRYMAN WINS GOLD AGAIN, NAMED SWIMMER OF THE MEET
Joel Berryman won his third individual gold of the Championships on Saturday evening in the 100 free as he edged out the competition with a time of 43.56 for a Drexel school record, CAA Championship record and NCAA B cut time.
Kyle Lukens earned bronze in the 200 fly as he finished with a time of 1:46.65, breaking his own school record that he set in 2014.
Joseph Brown finished with a bronze medal in the 200 breast for the men with a time of 2:00.50. Ralph Cannarozzi III place seventh at 2:04.71.
Drexel also earned bronze in the 400 free relay to close out the meet. The grouping of Berryman, Luke Hanner, Sean Swartz, and Lukens came in at 3:00.02.
Earlier in the day, Zoltan Gercsak placed fifth in the 1650 free finals as he touched the wall at 15:41.53, fellow Dragon Dane Bell came in at 16:06.07 for 11th place. Ivo Pejovic finished 15th at 16:09.39.
BERRYMAN WINS HIS SECOND INDIVIDUAL GOLD MEDAL, GERCSAK BREAKS 1990 400 IM MARK IN PRELIMS
Berryman grabbed his second individual gold in the 100 back when he touched the wall at 47.16, breaking a school record that he previously held.
Lukens earned silver in the 100 fly at 47.59, breaking the Drexel record by one-hundredth of second, a benchmark he previously set. J.T. Lumpkin placed eighth in the event, coming in at 49.77.
Hanner placed fifth in the 200 free with a time of 1:39.50.
In the 100 breast, three freshmen represented Drexel in the finals. Brown finished fifth (56.08), Harrison Schultz sixth (56.81) and Cannarozzi eighth (57.63).
During the morning prelims, Gercsak broke a long-standing Drexel mark in the 400 IM which was previously held by Ron Cook (4:02.33) from 1990.
BERRYMAN EARNS GOLD, RELAY GRABS SILVER ON THURSDAY
Berryman grabbed gold in the 50 free as he touched the wall at 20.02 to set a new Drexel record. Lukens placed sixth in the finals event with a time of 20.58.
Led by Berryman and Lukens in the leadoff and anchor positions, the Dragons earned silver in the 200 free relay along with Liam Kelly and Swartz with a collective time of 1:21.64.
DREXEL MEDAL IN TWO RELAYS ON WEDNESDAY
Drexel earned gold in the 200 medley relay and silver in the 800 free relay on the first day of competition that only saw two relay events take place.
The Dragons were led by Berryman, Cannarozzi, Lukens and Kelly in the 200 medley relay victory with a time of 1:27.87, a new school record.
The quartet of Berryman, Pejovic, Hanner and Lukens placed second in the 800 free relay at 6:34.44, also a new Drexel benchmark, behind William & Mary at 6:30.47.
