NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The No. 9 Drexel men's squash team (15-4) defeated No. 10 Cornell (9-9) by a final of 5-4 to capture the program's first B Division Hoehn Cup Championship in New Haven, Conn. on Sunday afternoon. Junior Michael Thompson also set a record for most individual wins for a Dragon in program history (17). The squad's B Division national championship also capped the season on an eight-match winning streak.
Freshman Bransten Ming clinched the victory for the Dragons as he won the fifth match of the day from the No. 4 position over Cornell's Jordan Brail, 11-9, 11-2, 11-5.
All five of the men's wins in the finals matchup came in sweeping fashion.
Fellow freshman Omar El Atmas earned a No. 1 position win over Harry Freeman of the Big Red, 12-10, 11-7, 11-8, while senior Ibrahim Bakir grabbed the No. 2 spot victory against Gustav Rundersjo, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9.
El Atmas lost just one match across the 2015-16 schedule as he is 16-1 with 11 of those victories coming from the No. 1. With his 14th win on Sunday, Bakir tied his total from a year ago.
Sophomore Atticus Kelly played from the No. 3 position for the Dragons, defeating Perry Hanson, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8, as he moved to 14-5 on the campaign.
In the No. 6 spot, Thompson extended his winning streak to nine as he snagged a 11-4, 12-10, 11-3 decision over Kevin Flannery. The junior improved to a team-best and program record 17-2 with the victory. His 17th win broke a tie he held with Binura Jayaasuriya (16 in 2012-13) for the most individual wins in a single season.
Drexel had defeated the Big Red earlier in the year, 6-3, on Saturday, Jan. 30. None of the matchups on Sunday were repeated from the prior affair. Cornell was looking for its fourth Hoehn Cup on Sunday, but were halted in their pursuit by the Dragons.
The victory concludes the Dragons' season schedule as select individuals will now gear up to compete at the Men's Individual Nationals in Stamford, Conn. from Friday, March 4 through Sunday, March 6.
