Charleston, S.C. – Drexel's struggles continued on Saturday afternoon at Charleston as the Dragons fell to the Cougars, 60-30. The Dragons shot a season-low 24 percent on the night and made just one field goal in the first half as they fell for the eighth straight time.
The Dragons (3-20, 1-11) combined poor shooting with poor ball handling. Drexel turned the ball over a season-high 23 times and was never in the game. The Cougars jumped out to a 12-0 lead and the Dragons didn't get on the board until Tyshawn Myles made a free throw with 9:37 to play in the half. Their first field goal came more than 13 minutes in when Tavon Allen sank a jump shot. It would turn out to be the only field goal of the first half. The team finished the half 1-for-17 from the floor and went to intermission down 30-10.
Drexel shot it a little better in the second half, making four of its first six shots as it cut the lead down to 15. That was as close as they would get. Charleston shot 48 percent in the second half and cruised to its 15th win of the season. The Cougars (15-8) are now 7-5 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
For the first time this year, no Dragon scored in double figures. Rodney Williams led the way with eight points, all from the free throw line. The junior was 8-for-10 from the line but 0-for-4 from the floor. No other Drexel player had more than five points. Drexel finished the game 8-for-34 from the floor and had just two three-pointers in 12 attempts. The Dragons scored 20 of their 38 points from the foul line.
Charleston's Cameron Johnson scored a game-high 16 points. Jarrell Brantley added 11 before fouling out as the Cougars were victorious in front of 3,456 fans as part of Charleston's homecoming celebration.
The Dragons will head back to Philadelphia and be off until Thursday, when they visit Delaware at the Bob Carpenter Center.
