Women's Tennis Suffers First Defeat of the Season Sunday at Penn
2/7/2016 3:06:00 PM | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's tennis team suffered its first defeated of the season Sunday afternoon at the hands of its neighbors, the Penn Quakers, 7-0.
The Dragons are now 4-1 on the year, and have not yet beat Penn in eight tries all-time.
Drexel fell in doubles as Penn won at Nos. 1 and 3 to take the point. The Quakers carried the momentum into singles play, sweeping all six matches. Clary Rodriguez Cruz played the closest match of the afternoon, forcing a second-set tiebreak at No. 2 against Sonya Latycheva. The sophomore from Puerto Rico could not force a third set, though, and ultimately fell, 6-1, 7-6 (5).
Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch each put up a strong fight at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively, but neither could gain the necessary break to pull off the upset.
With senior Erin Bowsher out of the singles lineup, freshman Anisiya Simpson saw her first action of the spring season. Simpson, who went 4-3 in the fall season, fell at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.
The Dragons will return to action next weekend when they travel up to Connecticut for matches against Fairfield on Friday and Sacred Heart on Saturday.
