CHARLESTON, S.C. – On the first leg of its spring break trip, Drexel Tennis ran into a tough College of Charleston team Tuesday as the women fell, 6-1, and the men dropped a 5-2 match at the College of Charleston Tennis Center.
With the loss, the women fall to 10-3 on the year, while the men are now 9-5 overall. This was the Dragons' first Colonial Athletic Association match of the season.
The Cougars' women jumped out to a quick start in doubles play and carried that momentum over into singles. Drexel would not let up, though. With the Cougars having already secured the match win by winning the first five points, the Dragons fought back. Lea Winkler earned a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Sarah Janes Jones at No. 5 singles to grab the Dragons' lone point. At No. 4, Ryshena Providence fought her way to three sets against Helena Nyikos. After Nyikos took the first set, 6-4, Providence grabbed the second set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (5), but Nyikos would then come through in the third, 10-7.
Drexel's men put up a strong fight as well, but would ultimately fall, 5-2. The Dragons dropped the first five points of the match, but would string together a couple of victories in the fifth and sixth ladder positions. After dropping the doubles point, the Dragons struggled in the top three spots. However, Balaji Lakshmanan, playing at No. 4, forced a second set tiebreak in his match before Sinan Orhon and Daniil Ginzburg picked up victories at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Orhon came back from a set down to beat Vasily Kichigan in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, for his 15th win of the year. Ginzburg, who made his first appearance of the spring season, earned a victory of Ryan Khan at No. 6, 7-5, 7-5.
Drexel Tennis will now head to North Carolina for the second and final match of its spring break trip when it squares off against UNCW on Friday beginning at 10:30 a.m.
