PHILADELPHIA – Matthew Cimato of wrestling and Emily Duffey of women's lacrosse have been named the Drexel School of Education Athletes of the Week for the week of March 2-8.
Cimato was crowned the EIWA champion at 149 pounds on Sunday at Princeton University as he beat Cornell's Joe Galasso, 5-4, for the title. The match came down to a dramatic finish in the final second. Second-seeded Cimato led, 4-2, with 10 seconds to go in regulation, but as time wound down Galasso was awarded a takedown to even the score. The junior from Yardley, Pa. was able to quickly escape before time expired to regain the lead and secure the victory to become Drexel's second-ever EIWA champion. Cimato's path to the title started out with a major 10-0 decision over Hofstra's Kyle Krasavage before he beat Navy's Cory Wilding, 5-4, then sixth-seeded Victor Lopez of Bucknell, 9-0.
Duffey tallied five goals and four assists as the Dragons went on to win both of their games. On Saturday, the senior from Mount Laurel, N.J. scored four goals, all of which came in the second half of the Dragons' 9-8 come-from-behind win over Villanova after trailing 6-2 at halftime. In Drexel's 11-5 win on Wednesday at home against Monmouth, she totaled a goal and three assists as she helped set up Devin Nihill on three occasions. Duffey leads the team in goals with 14 and is second in points with 18.
Cimato returns to the mat at the NCAA Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City beginning on March 17. Duffey and women's lacrosse host UMBC on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Vidas Field.
