PHILADELPHIA — The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell to No. 22/23 Georgetown Hoyas, 17–8, Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. The Dragons rallied from a 9–1 deficit to pull within three early in the second half, but a strong Hoyas surge down the stretch proved too much to overcome.
Annie Madden led DU in goals, scoring the third hat-trick of her career as Bea Buckley dished out four assists. With the loss, the Dragons move to 4-7 on the season.
Georgetown opened the game on a 6–0 run, holding Drexel scoreless until the 24-second mark of the first quarter. Four different Hoyas scored during the stretch, including a pair each from Maia Pronti and Gracie Driggs. Driggs finished the game with a game-high seven points. Mary Claire Heubeck helped put an end to the run, scoring the free-position goal.
The Hoyas carried their strong start into the second quarter, scoring three goals in a 2:16 span to extend the lead to 9–1. Teagan Quinn helped shift the tide in favor of the Dragons, converting a free-position attempt to spark a 6–1 run that included five goals over the final 3:55 of the first half. Caroline Senich added another free-position goal before Bea Buckley found Annie Madden who tallied through traffic for the strike.
The Dragons struck again just 13 seconds later, winning the draw and quickly moving down the field. Ellie Wall fed Hailey Kluepfel, who finished from the right wing. The Hoyas got back on the board with 21 seconds, but Drexel picked up the ensuing draw, as Buckley connected once again with Annie Madden down the middle twitch just three seconds left on the clock to pull the Dragons within four at the half.
Madden scored her third of the day early in the third, as Drexel capitalized on the women-up situation. The Hoyas would finally put a stop to the Dragons surge, holding them scoreless for nearly 23 minutes. Georgetown scored five straight from four different players, to pull out to a comfortable 15-7 lead.
Drexel finally put an end to the run at the 6:30 mark of the fourth quarter, as Kate Quinn tallied her first of the day. The Hoyas added two more to close the game, sealing the 17-8 victory.
The Dragons return to conference action on Saturday, traveling to Long Island to face Hofstra at 12 p.m.
