Crew Earns Two Top-5 Finishes Sunday at Knecht Cup

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – After fighting through tough racing conditions on Saturday, Drexel Crew grabbed two top-five finishes Sunday at the Knecht Cup Regatta on Mercer Lake.
The women's varsity four raced to a fourth-place finish in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, while the men's pair finished third in its first race of the season. The Dragons had four other boats race in Sunday's action – the women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshmen eight, men's freshmen four.
Drexel's varsity pair A finished third overall in the final on Sunday in its first competition of the season. The Dragons finished with a 7:26.85 to take third as Lafayette took first. Racing in its first competition of the season, the pair also advanced, moving onto Sunday's final. with a fourth-place time of 7:48.91 in its heat.
The women's varsity four, in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, also recorded a top-five finish. The Dragons finished a close grand final in fourth with a 7:36.37, six seconds behind first place Boston College. The boat had a strong showing on Saturday, too, winning its semifinal by nearly three seconds with an 8:21.80. The Dragons got to the semifinal by finishing second in their heat with a time of 7:58.59.
The women's varsity eight finished second in the petite final to take eighth overall with a time of 6:49.77. The Dragons finished second in their heat to UMass by posting a 7:26.84 to move into the semifinals where they finished fourth with a 6:53.19.
Drexel's second varsity eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, also took eighth overall with a time of 6:57.82 to take second in the petite final. To get there, the boat finished third with a 7:34.73 in its heat and just a second and a half behind second-place UConn and followed it up with a time of 7:03.45 to grab third in the semifinals.
Closing out the eights, the freshmen eight, rowing in the Maria Papadakis boat and finishing third in the petite final with a time of 7:25.45. The Dragons used a 8:15.54 to advance to Sunday's semifinal where it finished fifth with a time of 7:37.14.
The Dragons also had two men's boats post times good enough to advance to Day 2, one of which was the bronze medal-winning pair. The freshmen four, racing in the Oxholm boat, took first in the petite final to take seventh overall in Knecht Cup competition, crossing the finish line with a time of 7:25.81. To get there, the boat finished fourth in its semifinal with an 8:09.31 to move onto the petite final Sunday a time of 8:13.16 in its heat.
