ELKTON, Md. – Drexel Tennis picked up a pair of victories Sunday night as the women's team downed Delaware, 4-1, and the men's team earned the 4-0 sweep of the Blue Hens at the Elkton Indoor Tennis club.
The women now advance to 13-5 overall on the season and 2-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Drexel's men are now 12-6 on the year, tying the program record for most wins in a season. The win for the men was their fourth straight win against the Blue Hens.
"We fought hard today, we practiced hard this week and it really paid off," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "We worked a lot on our mental game, especially over that tough loss to Towson.
"We had to get back up and bounce back to where we need to be. I'm proud of the teams. We are looking forward to the competition we have this week to close out the regular season."
Drexel's women jumped out to win the doubles point then won three of the top four singles matches to put away the Blue Hens. After dropping the top spot, the Dragons had no trouble in the other two doubles matches. At No. 2, Ryshena Providence and Erin Bowsher made quick work of Sara Komer and Draga Sabotic, 6-3. Kendra Bunch and Lea Winkler earned their team-leading 16th win of the season as a duo, beating Sarah Hall and Arielle Shuren handedly, 6-1.
Everything clicked for the Dragons in singles play as well. Yazawa continued her strong season, winning her team-leading 18th match with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Studnicki. At No. 3 singles, Bunch bumped up and fought her way back from dropping the first set to win in three over Annie Jaskulski, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Winkler rolled over Komer at No. 4, 6-0, 6-3.
Drexel's men took care of business against a Delaware team that has now dropped 33 straight dual matches. In doubles, Hamza Laalej and Daniil Ginzburg fought their way to a 7-6 (3) win at No. 1 over Mike Furr and Blasé Casselbury, followed by a win from Sinan Orhon at Kashyap Ashok at No. 2 over Tyler Flematti and Venkatesh Ramkumar, 6-4, to take the point.
In singles, the Dragons outmatched the Blue Hens to grab the victory. Xabier Saavedra fought his way past Furr in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-2, in the top spot. The win made him just the second player to reach 50 career wins in the history of Drexel's men's program. At No. 2, Andrew Sinai blew past Flematti, 6-1, 6-2, followed by Laalej grabbing the 6-4, 6-2 win over Ramkumar at No. 3 to seal the deal.
The Dragons' men will head Temple on Wednesday afternoon to take on the Owls before both teams travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for a season-ending matchup with James Madison on Saturday.
