
Drexel's Pat Root Named First Team All-CAA

Philadelphia - Drexel senior Pat Root was named First Team All-Colonial Athletic Association for his performance on the field this season. In addition, Cole Shafer was named to the Second Team, while freshman Marshal King and Matthew Varian were named to the All-Rookie Team. Senior Hank Brown was selected to the CAA All-Academic Team.
Root, a defensemen, moved into the starting lineup early in the season and has been the Dragons' top defender. He caused 19 turnovers this season and picked up 22 ground balls. The Hamilton, Ontario product, who saw limited time as a junior, has been a big reason Drexel has given up the second fewest goals in conference play this year.
Shafer, a senior attackman, is second on the team with 19 goals The Coquitlam, British Columbia native, has 26 overall points, just one point behind the team leader. Shafer has scored 83 career goals entering the CAA Championships, which places him in 17th place on Drexel's career goals list.
King and Varian have proved to be valuable additions for the Dragons in their rookie campaigns. King has run with the first midfield for most of the season. He has seven goals and eight assists for 15 points. Varian has twice been named the CAA Rookie of the Week. He leads the team with 10 assists and is tied with Robert Frazee for the team lead with 27 points. King is from Victoria, British Columbia, while Varian is a native of Island Park, N.Y.
Brown has played in all 14 games this year primarily as a defensive midfielder. He scored two goals and had two assists. Brown is a finance major from Great Falls, Va.
Drexel will face Towson on Thursday afternoon in the CAA semifinals. The game will be played at Johnny Unitas Stadium in Towson, Md., at 4 p.m.
