Women's Soccer Defeats Temple, 2-1, in Season Opener
8/19/2016 9:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team defeated Temple, 2-1, in its first game of the 2016 season and the first game ever played at the new Temple Sports Complex. Shaelyn McCarty and Madison Dunn scored a goal apiece for the Dragons in the winning effort.
Drexel got on the board first as McCarty headed a cross from Vanessa Kara into the net in the 16th minute to give the Dragons a 1-0 advantage. The score held here for most of the first half until Dunn extended the lead to two with an unassisted goal off a corner kick with just over three minutes left in the half.
Drexel maintained its halftime score of 2-0 until the 59th minute, when Temple's Sarah McGlinn found a pass from Elaine Byerley and put it past junior goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami into the net to cut the Dragons' advantage to just one. Then with just over 18 minutes to play, Ogunsami made a crucial save as she was pulled out of the net but was still able to get a hand on the ball to deflect a Temple attempt and maintain Drexel's lead.
The Drexel defense continued to be strong, but a penalty kick awarded to Temple with 7:25 to play threatened to allow the Owls to even the score. The shot came in straight-on and Ogunsami was able to pull it in to once again prevent Temple from tying the game.
In a final effort the Owls put a dangerous cross into the box with just over two minutes to play, but Maddy Moyer was able to get a foot on it and clear it out before Temple was able to do any damage. The Dragons would hold on to edge out the Owls, 2-1, and start off the 2016 season with a victory.
On the whole, Drexel outshot the Owls, 21-15. Temple goalkeeper Jordan Nash totalled 12 saves on the outing, while Ogunsami tallied five on the night.
The Dragons return to action on Sunday as they travel to face another area-rival in the Villanova Wildcats. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
