Field Hockey Falls to Richmond in Season Opener, 4-1

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team (0-1) fell to the Richmond Spiders (1-1) by a final of 4-1 from Buckley Field in the Dragons' season opener.
Senior Idrienne Walker scored the lone goal for the Dragons in the early stages of the first half to put Drexel up first. Walker inserted a corner to start the play. Once the ball was settled and made its way to fellow senior Jessica McCarthy, the captain made a quick pass to Walker, who was standing near the goal line for the score.
Richmond scored an equalizer about five minutes later when Katrina Balatgek put away an unassisted goal to make it 1-1.
For the next 26:23, the two teams battled it out until halftime came with the score knotted at 1-1.
The two teams played an even game in the opening half with shots tied at five apiece and Drexel with a slight corner advantage, 3-2.
The Spiders came out strong in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals while maintaining a large shot edge.
Richmond's Emma Nash, Kaitlyn DaSilva and Emma Johnansson recorded the three second half goals for the Spiders as they went on to secure the 4-1 win over Drexel.
Drexel sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (L, 0-1) took the loss for the Dragons in the cage as she made eight saves while facing 21 totals shots across 70 minutes. Six of Gilchrist's saves came in the final 35 minutes of play.
Freshmen Tess Horan and Tess Bernheimer made their first collegiate starts for Drexel while fellow classmate Maria Palmieri made her first appearance.
Richmond led shots, 21-6, and corners, 7-3, at the end of regulation.
Drexel now hits the road for a pair of games against New Hampshire and Connecticut. The Dragons square off against UNH in Durham, N.H. on Friday, Sept. 2 at 3 p.m. before going up against No. 3 UConn on Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon.
