DURHAM, N.H. – The Drexel field hockey team (1-1) earned its first win of the 2016 season with a 3-2 victory over the New Hampshire Wildcats (1-2) on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Megan Wiest had a hand in all three of the Dragons' goals in the win with two goals and an assist.
Five minutes into the contest, Wiest put Drexel up first when she notched her first goal of the season as senior captain Jessica McCarthy was credited with the assist.
Less than a minute before halftime, UNH tied the game up at 1-1 when Ashley Mendonca scored on a set piece off a penalty corner.
But Wiest and the Dragons responded quickly in the second half. Just 32 seconds into the final half, Wiest notched her second of the game to put Drexel up 2-1. Freshman Tess Bernheimer recorded her first collegiate assist on the play.
Three minutes later, Drexel took a two-goal advantage from a penalty corner when freshman Tess Horan found the back of the cage by way of Wiest, who recorded an assist on the goal. It came as Horan's first collegiate goal.
The Wildcats scored about a minute following, 4:25 into the second half, when Lindsey Nerbonne scored her fourth of the season for UNH.
For the next 31 minutes, Drexel held to its 3-2 lead though the Wildcats recorded 13 of their 21 shots in the final 35 minutes. In the second half alone, UNH attempted nine penalty corner, none of which the Dragons allowed a goal on.
The five-point effort set a new career high for Wiest, a Northampton, Pennsylvania native, after her two-goal, four-point game against Lafayette last season on Sept. 28.
In the cage, sophomore Erin Gilchrist (W, 1-1) grabbed her first win of the year as she made 10 saves, six coming in the second half.
Drexel will now turn its attention to the No. 3 Connecticut Huskies as the Dragons play in Storrs, Conn. on Sunday, Sept. 4 at noon.
