STORRS, Conn. – The Drexel field hockey team (1-2) dropped its afternoon matchup with the No. 3 Connecticut Huskies (3-0) by a final of 7-2 on Sunday.
After sticking with UConn for the first 30 minutes of the contest, the Dragons conceded two late goals in the opening period as the squad trailed 2-0 going into the half.
The first goal for the Huskies came from a penalty stroke at 30:12 in the first half as Casey Umstead made it 1-0 for UConn. Roughly two and a half minutes later, Anna Middendorf gave Connecticut a two-goal edge on a penalty corner.
Connecticut then took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the second half. Drexel responded with its first goal at 48:46 when senior Jessica McCarthy converted a penalty stroke for the Dragons. It came as McCarthy's first goal of the year.
Following Drexel's stroke, UConn went back up by three when Karlie Heistand scored at 49:17. It started a string of four straight for the Huskies as Drexel trailed 7-1 late.
Drexel freshman Tess Bernheimer notched her first collegiate goal in the final minute of play on a penalty corner and McCarthy earned the assist as Drexel fell by the 7-2 final.
All seven of UConn's goals came off the sticks of seven different individuals.
Goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (L, 1-2) made a career high 14 saves on 33 total shots faced in the loss.
Drexel now returns home to face Saint Joseph's on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. from Buckley Field.
