Field Hockey Earns Comeback Win Over UC Davis, 3-1

DAVIS, Calif. – The Drexel field hockey team (4-3) moved over. 500 for the first time this season with a 3-1 win over the UC Davis Aggies behind a two-goal game from sophomore Megan Wiest.

Wiest now has four goals in her last three games and a total of six on the season, already eclipsing her freshman total of four from a year ago.

Though the Dragons came away with the win in Davis, they found themselves in a 1-0 hole at halftime.

Agustina Singh of the Aggies started the scoring 8:35 in when she put in a pass from Lauren Copeland.

Drexel had its chances in the first half as senior Idrienne Walker had consecutive saved roughly midway through.

Wiest notched her first goal 4:25 into the final half on a corner opportunity. Sophomore Amy Ferguson and Walker both tallied assists on the play.

Freshman Tess Bernheimer gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead with 18:45 remaining. After an initial shot was saved off the stick of Bernheimer, she scored off the rebound in front of the cage.

Wiest sealed the victory for Drexel will about 11 minutes left in regulation for her second of the game. The goal came via a penalty corner inserted by freshman Tess Horan to the far side of the circle to senior Jessica McCarthy. McCarthy then set up Wiest for the score. It came as McCarthy's fifth assist on the year.

The Dragons held onto the two-goal lead for their fourth win of the campaign.

Drexel outshot UC Davis, 18-10, and maintained a 7-5 edge on penalty corners.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 4-3) made four saves in the effort while only allowing one goal.

The Dragons are now 4-1 on the road.

Drexel concludes its three-game road trip out in California with the Pacific Tigers in Stockton on Sunday, September 18 at 4 p.m. ET.
