PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team (5-4) earned a 5-2 victory over the Monmouth Hawks (7-2) on Friday evening from Buckley Field. Four different Dragons came away with goals in the win.
Drexel struck early in the contest when redshirt junior Alison McCardell notched her second goal on the season 1:29 in off a pass from senior captain Jessica McCarthy.
The Hawks evened the score at 1-1 about six minutes later when Josephine van der Hoop stole a pass in Drexel's defensive zone before getting off a quick shot for the goal.
A defensive save with 10:21 left in the half by McCardell from a Monmouth corner kept the game at 1-1. It came as the Hawks best chance to get ahead in the game.
The Dragons would go on to have two penalty corner opportunities on their own in the opening half with 6:47 remaining and 0:00 remaining.
Drexel responded right at the end of the first half. With time winding down, Drexel earned a penalty corner. After the clock hit 0:00, senior Idrienne Walker inserted the corner which led to an initial shot from McCarthy. Drexel grabbed the rebound which gave sophomore Delaney Baxendale a chance to make a pass to freshman Tess Bernheimer who put it away at close range in front of the cage.
Drexel went into the half with a 2-1 advantage.
Just like the beginning of the first half, the Dragons went up 3-1 less than two minutes into the final half for a two-goal advantage. Walker scored her first of the day after she deflected a shot from the top of the circle off the stick of freshman Tess Horan, who was credited with the assist.
Monmouth's Gab Girardi narrowed Drexel edge to one goal when she scored with 25:31 left in regulation.
Drexel returned fire when sophomore Megan Wiest tipped a pass from Bernhimer out of midair for the 4-2 lead. The goal came as Wiest's team-leading eighth of the year. It also came as Bernheimer's first game with both a goal and an assist.
Walker scored the insurance goal, her second of the game, with 4:48 remaining with an assist by sophomore Lindsay Boerner.
Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 5-4) came away with the win as she made three saves on the evening.
The Dragons led penalty corners, 7-6, while Monmouth had a slight edge in shots, 16-15.
With no game on Sunday, Drexel now gears up for a midweek matchup on Tuesday, September 27 at Penn. Action is set to begin at 4 p.m.
