PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (5-5) fell to the Penn Quakers (6-2) by a final of 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon from Penn's Ellen Vagelos Field.
The lone second-half goal by the Dragons was not enough to combat Penn in the midweek, neighborhood matchup.
Goals were at a minimum in the first half. Drexel had a couple of early chances with the squad's first corner opportunity coming around five minutes into the affair. Freshman Tess Bernheimer, this week's CAA Rookie of the Week, took a shot that was blocked.
Five minutes later at 10:01, Bernheimer had her second shot of the afternoon saved by Penn goalkeeper Liz Mata. Sophomore Megan Wiest got another chance at it, but her shot was blocked by a Quaker defender.
With 50 seconds left in the opening half, Penn's Gina Guccione scored a late goal to give the Quakers the 1-0 lead going into halftime. A long shot from outside the circle was played by Drexel goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist before Guccione settled the rebound for the score. Gilchrist made six saves in the first 35 minutes.
Penn took a 2-0 advantage 9:20 into the second half when Guccione scored her second of the day off a pass from teammate Alexa Hoover.
Bernheimer put the Dragons on the board about three minutes later to get back within one as she deflected a close-range shot by senior Idrienne Walker in front of the cage. It came as Bernheimer's fourth goal of the year and Walker's third assist.
With around 11 minutes to play, Drexel had another corner opportunity and another scoring chance, but could not convert the attempt. Walker inserted to senior captain Jessica McCarthy, but her shot from the top of the circle was saved.
In a last effort to tie the game, sophomore Katie Bagdon went into the game as Drexel's kicking back for the final 2:31 so that Drexel could get more offensive chances. But the Dragons were not able to get a shot off in the final minutes of play.
In total, Penn led shots, 16-6, and shots on goal, 11-3.
Gilchrist made a total of nine saves on the afternoon across 67:29 minutes. Walker and Bernheimer led the Dragons with two shots apiece.
Drexel now looks toward Northeastern to open up conference play at home this Friday, September 30 at 7:30 p.m. before hosting No. 6 Northwestern on Sunday at noon for High School Day.
