PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (6-5, 1-0 CAA) grabbed its first CAA win in its first opportunity on a rainy, cold Friday evening from West Philadelphia as the Dragons downed the Northeastern Huskies (5-5, 0-1 CAA) by a final of 2-1 in overtime.
Senior captain Jessica McCarthy scored both goals as Drexel secured the conference win.
Northeastern stuck first in the affair as the Huskies converted a corner with about nine minutes to play in the first half. Axelle Dewamme inserted to Natalie Stewart, who stopped the ball and set up a shot for Laura MacLachlan.
Less than three minutes later, McCarthy responded for the Dragons. On one of five corner chances in the opening half, sophomore Megan Wiest salvaged a corner opportunity by making a pass to McCarthy, who was standing on the left half of the circle. The senior captain took a powerful shot to even up the score going into halftime, 1-1.
The two squads battled in the second half with no goals to show for it as the Dragons and the Huskies went to overtime. It came as the Dragons' second-straight home game that went to OT.
Drexel came out strong in the 15-minute overtime period, taking all six shots which forced the Northeastern goalkeeper to make three saves. Wiest and McCarthy each had three apiece.
With 6:01 left on the clock, sophomore Amy Ferguson made a pass to McCarthy, who was ready for the opportunity in the same location where she tallied her first goal. The Havertown native stepped up for the Dragons as she scored the game-winning goal for the conference win.
The Dragons maintained a 21-15 edge on shots and 10-8 advantage on shots on goal. Wiest led the squad with eight followed by McCarthy with six. Senior Idrienne Walker and freshman Tess Bernheimer recorded two each.
Drexel led penalty corners, 10-7, including a 2-0 advantage in OT.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist made seven saves as she earned her sixth win of the year.
Drexel returns to action this Sunday, October 2 at Buckley Field as the squad hosts No. 6 Northwestern in a noon start on High School Day.
