ITHACA, N.Y. - The Drexel wrestling team fell to No. 7 Cornell in dual action on Friday evening, 24-18. The Dragons won five of the 10 matches over the Top-10 Big Red, but came up shy in the end.
Tanner Shoap started things off for the Dragons with a second period technical fall over Cornell's Noah Baughman at 125. The Big Red's No. 19 Mark Grey retaliated with a win-by-fall over Brendan Hasson at 133 and then Will Koll extended its lead to 10-5 with a major decision over Vincent Foggia at 141. No. 18 Matthew Cimato came back with a major decision over Cornell's Jonathan Furnas at 149 to bring the Dragons within one point, 10-9, but then Taylor Simaz helped the Big Red pull away again with a major decision over Willie Davis at 157.
At 165, No. 4 Dylan Palacio defeated Austin Rose by major decision to give Cornell a 18-9 advantage. However, Ebed Jarrell cut the Big Red's advantage to six points with a win over No. 19 Brandon Womack at 174. Cornell's No. 4 Brian Realbuto would go on to pin Owen Brooks at 184 and despite Joshua Murphy and Joey Goodhart earning decisions in the final two matches, it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Big Red had created. The Dragons would ultimately fall by a final score of 24-18.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference action, while Cornell improves to 5-1, 2-0 EIWA. Each of Drexel's three losses this season have come at the hands of nationally-ranked programs.
The Dragons will return to action on Sunday, as they host No. 17 Stanford at the Daskalakis Athletic Center for a dual that is set to begin at 1 p.m.
