PHILADELPHIA – The No. 25 Drexel wrestling team fell to No. 17 Stanford in dual action on Sunday afternoon, 27-9. The Dragons held the Cardinal close through the first five matches, but Stanford was able to slowly pull away and pick up its fifth victory of the season.
The dual began with the 165 match, where Austin Rose lost a close match to No. 18 Keaton Subjeck by a 3-2 decision. Ebed Jarrell followed at 174 and wrestled hard but fell to Stanford's Peter Galli, 11-6. At 184, Alex DeCiantis picked up the Dragons' first victory of the afternoon as he defeated the Cardinal's Zack Nevills, 10-3 to cut Stanford's lead to 6-3.
Joshua Murphy took No. 20 Josh Marchok to the second set of tiebreakers at 197, but when the last period of overtime ended Marchok took the riding time point and walked away with the win. Joey Goodhart found himself in the same situation in the heavyweight match as he fought No. 10 Nathan Butler through to the last overtime period, but this time Goodhart came out on top after being awarded the riding time point. This brought the Dragons within three points, trailing Stanford, 9-6.
At 125, Tanner Shoap dropped a 9-5 decision to No. 14 Gabriel Townsell and despite a hard-fought match at 133, Brendan Hasson lost by fall to Peter Russo with nine seconds remaining in the third period. Then Stanford's No. 3 Joey McKenna picked up a technical fall over Vincent Foggia at 141 to extend the Cardinal's advantage to 23-6 with two matches to go.
No. 18 Matthew Cimato picked up a 5-0 win over Tommy Pawelski at 149, but it was not enough to get the Dragons back in it. Paul Fox earned a major decision over Willie Davis to close out the afternoon's competition and give Stanford a 27-9 victory.
With the loss, the Dragons move to 7-4 overall, while Stanford improves to 5-1 thus far on the season. Each of Drexel's four losses this season has come at the hands of nationally-ranked programs.
The Dragons return to action on Friday, Jan. 20 as they visit EIWA opponent Binghamton for a dual at 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, the squad will return to the DAC as they host Oregon State on Spirit Night. Matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
