Two Dragons Place at 2017 Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Kevin Devoy Jr. earned a fourth place finish at 133 and Matthew Cimato finished sixth at 149 while representing Drexel Wrestling at the 2017 Southern Scuffle. Devoy and Cimato were two of six Drexel wrestlers that advanced to the second day of competition at the annual tournament.
Devoy, who earned the third seed in his weight class in the pre-tournament rankings, started the Scuffle with a major decision over Air Force's Dylan Hyder, but then fell to Northern Iowa's No. 6 Josh Alber in his next match in the 133 bracket. He started day two by securing a medical forfeit over No. 8 Nathan Boston and then went on to pick up decisions over No. 7 Colby Smith of Appalachian State and No. 5 Mitchell McKee of Minnesota to advance to the third place match. There he was defeated again by Adler, but walked away with a fourth place finish at the tournament.
Cimato, notched at No. 6 in his weight class prior to the tournament, won his first three matches at 149 and secured extra points in two of those three with a major decision over Northern Colorado's Benjamin Polkowske and a technical fall against Gardner-Webb's Joby Armenta. His first loss came in the quarterfinals at the hands of No. 3 Patricio Lugo of Edinboro, who edged Cimato with a 3-2 decision to close out his first day of competition. The redshirt senior began day two with a 5-1 decision over North Carolina's Troy Heilmann and then went on to earn a major decision over Cleveland State's Nick Montgomery to advance to the consolation semifinals. There, Cimato fell to No. 5 Max Thomsen of Northern Iowa and then in the fifth place match he dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 4 Laike Gardner of Lehigh. Cimato finished competition at the 2017 Southern Scuffle in sixth place at 149 pounds.
Rose took a 6-2 decision over Stanford's Peter Galli to begin competition at 165, but then suffered an 8-5 loss to Lehigh's No. 8 Drew Longo in his second match of the first day. He went on to pick up two wins in the consolations to advance to the second day of competition, where he will was halted by Chad Pyke of North Carolina State in his first match of day two with a 9-2 decision.
DeCiantis started off with a loss to Northern Iowa's No. 3 Drew Foster in his first match at 184, but then rallied and advanced through the wrestlebacks. DeCiantis earned decisions over Cleveland State's Nick Corba, Minnesota's Bobby Steveson, and his teammate Stephen Loiseau to move on to day two in the consolation rounds. However, in his first match of the second day of competition he was stopped by No. 7 Dylan Gabel of Northern Colorado with a 2-0 decision.
Murphy also suffered a loss in his first match at 197, dropping a major decision to North Carolina's Danny Chaid. Like DeCiantis, Murphy rebounded starting with a win-by-fall over Sawyer Root of the Citadel and then following with decisions over Scottie Boykin of Chattanooga and Stevie Cervantes of Navy to advance to the round of 12. He was halted there on day two as Ben Darmstadt of Finger Lakes Prep edged him with a 10-9 decision.
Goodhart, who earned the eighth spot in the pre-tournament seedings for his weight class, started competition in the heavyweight bracket with a technical fall over the Citadel's Michael McAleavey and then went on to edge Lehigh's Doug Vollaro in his second match, 4-3. He was sent to the consolations after a major decision at the hands of No. 1 Austin Schafer of Oklahoma State, but was still able to advance to the second day of competition in the wrestleback rounds. On day two, however, he fell to Hofstra's Mike Hughes by a major decision that concluded his run at this year's tournament.
Also competing at the Southern Scuffle from the Drexel squad was Tanner Shoap, Dakota Greene, Ebed Jarrell, and Loiseau, but they were each halted after the first day of action.
The Dragons will return to action on Friday, Jan. 13 when they visit EIWA opponent Cornell for a dual meet in Ithaca, N.Y. Matches are set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
