Men's Swimming and Diving Wins 2017 Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel men's swimming and diving team earned a first-place finish at the 2017 Patriot Invitational. The Dragons won the three-day tournament with a high score of 779.
UNCW (749.50) placed second at the Invitational, followed by George Mason (658.50), Seton Hall (565), UMBC (501), Florida Atlantic (396), American (120), and Shippensburg (59).
The men's squad recorded two first-place times, one second-place and one third-place finish on the final day of competition on its way to an overall victory. Jason Arthur captured first in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:47.13, while Joseph Brown won the 200-yard breaststroke as he clocked in at 2:02.29. The 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Arthur, Luke Hanner, Stathis Malamas, and Kiran Richardson took second with a time of 3:01.28. A third-place finish from Malamas with a time of 45.02 in the 100-yard freestyle rounded out the medalists for the Dragons on the last day of competition.
"We use this invitational as a bench mark for where we we're at this point in the season and both teams surpassed my expectations," remarked Head Coach Adam Braun. "I am very happy with how they battled through both physical and mental obstacles. It's a great accomplishment for the men's team to come away winning. I am excited to see what else we can accomplish this year."

Next up, Drexel will compete at the AT&T Winter National Championships in Columbus, Ohio from Thursday, Nov. 30 through Saturday, Dec. 2 to close out the 2017 portion of the schedule. The swimming & diving teams will return to action in 2018 on Saturday, Jan. 6 when the Dragons will face CAA foes Delaware and Northeastern in Newark, Del.

FRIDAY FINAL RESULTS | FRIDAY FINAL SCORES | DIVING FINAL SCORES
FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel men's swimming and diving team finished Friday's competition leading the pack and goes into the final day of the Patriot Invitational with 567.50 overall points.
UNCW stands in second place behind the Dragons after day two with a score of 538.50. George Mason (474.50) currently holds third place, followed by Seton Hall (386.50), UMBC (360), Florida Atlantic (277), American (90), and Shippensburg (51).
Drexel tallied three first-place, two second-place, and four third-place finishes on day two of competition. Kiran Richardson earned a first-place time of 1:39.33 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Stathis Malamas finished third with a time of 1:39.58 in the same event. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Ralph Cannarozzi III took first at 55.68, while Joseph Brown added a third-place time of 55.91. Jason Arthur rounded out the Dragons' first-place finishes on the day as he clocked in at 49.35 in the 100-yard backstroke.
The 800-yard freestyle relay squad consisting of Luke Hanner, Patrick Cobb, Malamas, and Richardson took second with at time of 6:43.54. Meanwhile the 200-yard medley relay team finished third after a 1:32.12 effort from Arthur, Cannarozzi, Joe Short, and Dave Kneiss.
Diving rounded out competition as Simon Carne earned a second-place score of 284.05 in the 3-meter dive. He was followed by Anthony Musciano, who totaled 250.85 points in the same event.
Competition will resume on Saturday with the final day of competition beginning at 10 a.m. with the prelims followed by finals at 6 p.m.
The men will compete tomorrow in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly, 1,650-yard freestyle, 400-yard freestyle relay, and time trials.

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel men's swimming and diving teams sits in second place out of eight competing teams at the conclusion of day one of the Patriot Invitational hosted by George Mason.
The Dragons tallied 250.5 points on the day and trail only UNCW, who scored 252.50. Following Drexel is George Mason (188.50), Seton Hall (181.50), UMBC (145), Florida Atlantic (127), American (46), and Shippensburg (37).
The men's performance on Thursday was highlighted by a first-place finish from Jason Arthur in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:49.09. Patrick Cobb added a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle, while Luke Hanner finished third in the same event just 0.07 seconds behind him. The 200-yard men's free relay team consisting of Arthur, Kiran Richardson, Dave Kneiss, and Stathis Malamas also earned third place with a time of 1:22.75.
In the 1-meter dive, Anthony Musciano took second place with a score of 270.90. Simon Carne added a score of 258.20 which tied for third place in the event.
Action resumes on Friday at 10 a.m. with the prelims followed by the finals at 6 p.m. Diving prelims and finals begin at noon.
The men will compete tomorrow in the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, time trials and the 3-meter dive.
