LAS VEGAS – Stephen Loiseau and Austin DeSanto fared well on the first day of competition at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and advanced to represent Drexel Wrestling in Saturday's matches. Loiseau will wrestle in the championship semifinals, while DeSanto will compete in the second consolation round of eight.
Loiseau began competition at 197 pounds with a 3-2 win over Purdue's No. 15 Christian Brunner and then went on to defeat Eastern Michigan's Derek Hillman, 4-0. In the quarterfinals, Loiseau picked up a 9-2 victory over Cal Poly's Tom Lane to advance to day two. He will face No. 3 Jared Haught of Virginia Tech in the semifinals on Saturday.
DeSanto started the day off with a 22-7 technical fall over Columbia's Chris Scorese. He continued by taking down No. 12 Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech, 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. There, he was halted by Virginia's No. 7 Jack Mueller by a 4-0 decision. He will begin competition in the consolation round on Saturday morning.
Although not advancing to the second day of competition, many Dragons also had strong showing on Friday. Ebed Jarrell picked up a major decision in his first match of the day at 165 pounds over California Baptist's Christian Smith, but then fell to Virginia Tech's No. 5 David McFadden in his second outing. Jarrell picked up an 8-4 win over West Virginia's Nick Kiussis in the second consolation round of 16, but then was stopped by Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State to conclude his competition at the tournament.
Austin Rose was edged by Oklahoma's No. 13 Yoanse Mejias in his first match of the day at 174, but then came back with two wins in the wrestleback rounds. He first defeated Kent State's Dylan Barreiro, 7-6 and then went on to take a 5-2 victory from Bucknell's Nick Stephani. He was halted, however, by Harvard's No. 19 Josef Johnson with an 11-3 major decision in the second consolation round of 16 to wrap up his efforts at the Invitational.
Four additional Dragons picked up at least one win on the day, including Zack Fuentes at 125, Trevor Elfvin at 149, Joshua Murphy at 184, and Sean O'Malley at heavyweight. They were each halted as well and do not advance to Saturday's competition.
Chandler Olson and Evan Barczak also competed for Drexel at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively, but were not able to secure a win.
Competition at the Cliff Keen Invitational is set to resume on Saturday morning at 9 a.m PST/12 p.m. EST.
