FINAL RESULTS
LAS VEGAS – Freshman Austin DeSanto and redshirt junior Stephen Loiseau led the Dragons as they each placed at the 2017 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. DeSanto earned a fourth-place finish at 133 pounds after defeating three top-20 opponents, while Loiseau picked up a sixth-place finish at 197.
DeSanto started off day one with a 22-7 technical fall over Columbia's Chris Scorese. He continued by taking down No. 12 Dennis Gustafson of Virginia Tech, 5-4 to advance to the quarterfinals. In his final match of the day, he was halted by Virginia's No. 7 Jack Mueller by a 4-0 decision and sent to the consolation finals for day two.
To start the second day of competition, DeSanto came out with a 7-3 win over Wyoming's Montorie Bridges. He then went on to defeat No. 6 Dom Forys of Pitt by an 11-9 decision. In his biggest upset yet, the rookie earned a 22-10 major decision over second-ranked Stevan Micic of Michigan in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place match. There he faced Mueller of Virginia for the second time on the tournament and fell by a 7-0 decision to finish in the fourth-place spot.
Loiseau began competition at 197 pounds on Friday with a 3-2 win over Purdue's No. 15 Christian Brunner and then went on to defeat Eastern Michigan's Derek Hillman, 4-0. In the quarterfinals, Loiseau picked up a 9-2 victory over Cal Poly's Tom Lane to advance to day two.
Loiseau started out Saturday's competition in the semifinals against third-ranked Jared Haught of Virginia Tech, where Haught defeated Loiseau by fall. The redshirt junior dropped a 7-1 decision to Northern Iowa's Jacob Holschlag in the consolation semifinals and then was overcome by CSU-Bakersfield's No. 9 Matt Williams in the fifth-place match. He ended the tournament with a sixth-place finish.
Although not advancing to the second day of competition, many Dragons also had strong showings on Friday. Ebed Jarrell picked up a major decision in his first match of the day at 165 pounds over California Baptist's Christian Smith, but then fell to Virginia Tech's No. 5 David McFadden in his second outing. Jarrell picked up an 8-4 win over West Virginia's Nick Kiussis in the second consolation round of 16, but then was stopped by Andrew Fogarty of North Dakota State to conclude his competition at the tournament.
Austin Rose was edged by Oklahoma's No. 13 Yoanse Mejias in his first match of the day at 174, but then came back with two wins in the wrestleback rounds. He first defeated Kent State's Dylan Barreiro, 7-6 and then went on to take a 5-2 victory from Bucknell's Nick Stephani. He was halted, however, by Harvard's No. 19 Josef Johnson with an 11-3 major decision in the second consolation round of 16 to wrap up his efforts at the Invitational.
Four additional Dragons picked up at least one win on Friday, including Zack Fuentes at 125, Trevor Elfvin at 149, Joshua Murphy at 184, and Sean O'Malley at heavyweight. They were each halted as well and did not advance to Saturday's competition.
Chandler Olson and Evan Barczak also competed for Drexel at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively, but were not able to secure a win.
Next up, the Dragons will return home to host EIWA opponents Navy and Lehigh in the Daskalakis Athletic Center next weekend for dual meets. Drexel will face Navy first on Friday, Dec. 8 in a 5 p.m. start before hosting Lehigh on Sunday, Dec. 10 at 4 p.m.
