VESTAL, N.Y. -- The Drexel women's tennis team on Friday night swept the Binghamton Bearcats in Vestal, N.Y., 7-0, while the men's team fell to the Bearcats, 6-1.
The women's team improves to 5-1 on the young season, while the men's team drops to 4-2.
Drexel's women were dominant Friday night in their sweep of the Bearcats, only dropping one set against a formidable opponent. In doubles play, the Dragons seized momentum in the match getting wins at No. 2 from Ryshena Providence, who returned to the lineup, and Clary Rodriguez Cruz, 6-2, and at No. 3 from Lea Winkler and Honami Yazawa, 6-3. The win for Winkler was her 50th, as she became just the second player in Drexel Tennis history to win 50 or more matches in both singles and doubles.
The Dragons carried that energy into singles play and cruised to victory. Yazawa battled to a three-set victory over Binghamton's top singles player, Annie DiMuro, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2. In the second spot, Ghita Benhadi found her stride, defeating Rebecca Dellaway, 6-4, 6-2. The middle of the lineup featured a win from Kendra Bunch over Samara Eisenberg, 6-2, 6-4, and a victory from Winkler over Olga Ostrovetsky, 6-1, 6-1. At the fifth positon, Rodriguez Cruz breezed past Paulina Tafer, 6-1, 6-2, while Anisiya Simpson, who has been playing well from the sixth spot, put away Allison Roma, 8-1.
While Drexel's men did not have the successful night they were looking for on the court, falling to the Bearcats, 6-1, they did come away win one individual milestone. Senior doubles specialist Kashyap Ashok won his 48th career doubles match, passing Daniel Hansen to become the winningest men's double player in Drexel Tennis history, and doing so in only his third season at the school. He and Sinan Orhon combined for a 6-3 win over Kushaan Nath and Thomas Caputo in the top spot. Hamza Laalej and Youssef Lahlou would join them with a 6-3 win of their own over Frenk Kote and Valentin Bouchet at the No. 2. However, the doubles point would be all that the Dragons could muster.
Drexel will face a quick turnaround, taking on Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y. on Saturday with the women playing at 1 p.m. and the men following at 3 p.m.
