CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Drexel women's swimming and diving team closed out the 2017 CAA Swimming and Diving Championships from Christiansburg, Va. on Saturday night with a fourth-place finish. In the four-day meet, the Drexel women earned six gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Drexel head coach Adam Braun shared honors for the Women's Swimming Coach of the Year with James Madison's Dane Pederson following the conclusion of the event.
Freshman Alexa Kutch and senior Rachel Bernhardt both took home gold medals again on the final night as they each finished with two individual golds for the meet.
Kutch won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:55.12 for a new Drexel, CAA All-Time and CAA Championships record on Saturday. The freshman swept the backstrokes at the meet after winning the 100 on Friday. Fellow freshman Alicia Diaz placed fourth in the 200 at 1:59.82 while junior Gillian Gress came in eighth with a time of 2:04.42.
In a similar vein, Bernhardt earned gold in the 200-yard breaststroke to sweep the breaststroke events with a time of 2:12.60 on Saturday evening. The senior finished the meet second in total points earned with 56 behind William & Mary's Jaimie Miller at 60.
The women ended the night with a bronze finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay to set a new Drexel record with a time of 3:24.79 from Bernhardt, junior Emily Joyce, Kutch and senior Claudia Duguay.
Joyce also came in 15th place in the 1650-yard freestyle earlier in the night with a time of 17:21.11. Freshman Dora Gercsak placed 17th at 17:29.26.
Sophomore April Forsthoffer turned in a sixth-place performance in the 200-yard butterfly behind a time of 2:02.30.
