PHILADELPHIA – Head Coach Doug Hess has announced the newest member of his Drexel men's soccer coaching staff. Ayotunde Ogunbiyi will join the coaching staff of the Dragons for the upcoming 2017 season after a season at UC Riverside and a distinguished professional playing career. Ogunbiyi will serve as Hess' second assistant following the promotion of Sean Lawlor to the top assistant's role.
"We are very excited to have Tunde as part of our program and the greater Drexel family here in Philadelphia," Hess said in announcing Ogunbiyi's arrival. "Tunde stood out in the candidate pool, as his passion for the game and desire to coach goalkeepers was evident in our first phone call. He is a young and hungry coach, and brings a wealth of experiences to our staff."
Ogunbiyi will be making a return to his hometown as he joins the Dragons. The Gwynnedd, Pa. native spent last year on the West Coast, helping the UC Riverside Highlanders to a Big West Tournament berth and the team's first nine-win season in three years. Ogunbiyi also has experience as the Director of Goalkeeping Arsenal FC Academy, where he instructed all goalkeepers for the USSF Developmental Academy teams. Prior to that, he served as a club coach with LA Premier.
Ogunbiyi spent two years at the University of New Hampshire before transferring to Boston College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics with a physics minor in 2011. He helped the Eagles to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, including a run to the third round in 2009. Following graduation, Ogunbiyi played professionally in Denmark for three years, most recently with Naestved BK.
In addition to his collegiate and professional playing experience, Ogunbiyi also spent two years in the Nigerian Olympic pool, playing in a number of qualifiers.
"As a Philadelphia native, I am very excited to return home and work at a school like Drexel," Ogunbiyi said. "Doug has a long history of success at the Division I level, and I look forward to learning from his experience and expertise."
Ogunbiyi will work primarily with the Drexel goalkeepers as well as over-see student-athlete physical development, community out-reach programs, and assist in recruitment coordination.
