PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel rowing team won its fifth consecutive overall team title and first ever women's points title in a historic Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River at the 79th annual Dad Vail Regatta presented by Independence Blue Cross and the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center at Thomas Jefferson University. The Dragons won both the men's and women's varsity eight gold medals en route to seven medals in total for the event – five gold, a silver and a bronze.
This comes as the first time since Purdue in 2007 that a school has won both the men's and women's heavyweight gold medals at Dad Vail. The gold medal came as the first-ever grand finals win for the women's varsity eight at Dad Vail. For the men, it was the second gold in program history for the varsity eight with the first coming in 2013. Also winning gold was the women's second varsity eight, women's third varsity eight and men's freshmen eight. The men's third varsity eight took the silver, and the women's varsity four earned the bronze. The seven medals tie the program record for a Dad Vail, originally set in 2016. Drexel has now won 40 of its 62 all-time Dad Vail medals under the guidance of Director of Rowing Paul Savell, who has guided the program now through 10 Dad Vails.
Drexel has now won the overall title at the event five times in a row, each year dating back to 2013. The victory in 2013 was the Dragons' first Dad Vail title in program history. The fifth straight overall title ties Purdue, which won it all five times in a row from 2000-04, for the record. The Dragons' women's points title is the first in the program's history.
The women's varsity eight added the most impressive victory to date to perhaps the strongest season in the boat's history with winning the boat's first ever Dad Vail gold medal. Racing in the Cara Fry boat, the women's varsity eight raced to a final time of 6:30.064 to best rival UMass by nearly six seconds and open water. The boat advanced Friday to Saturday morning's grand final with a first-place time of 6:44.992 in its semifinal.
Drexel's top men's eight won the coveted gold medal for the first time since it won the gold for the first time ever in 2013. Racing in the Lois Krall II boat, the men's varsity eight followed up the women's win with a victory of its own, crossing the finish line with a winning time of 5:39.633 to best a strong Saint Joseph's boat by nearly six seconds and open water. The Drexel boat advanced to Saturday morning's grand with a first-place time of 5:52.689 in its semifinal on Friday.
The Dragons' women's eights were dominant all morning as the second varsity eight and third varsity eight joined the top eight with gold medals of their own. The women's second varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley II boat, took the top time with a 6:36.431 to beat second-place Fordham by more than five seconds. It raced to a second-place time of 6:57:052, just over a second behind UMass in the semifinals on Friday. The third varsity eight raced in an abbreviated field of three and bested both competitors with a time of 6:51.166 in the Maria Papadakis boat, cruising past the rest of the field by nearly nine seconds.
Rounding out the Dragons' gold medals was the men's freshmen eight. The gold medal is the fourth for the boat in the last five years and its third in a row. Racing in the Joseph Greipp boat, the freshmen men finished with a 5:51.575 and outlasted a Temple crew that hung with them through much of the race. The boat took the top time in its time trial before winning its heat with a time of 6:10.255 on Friday to move into the grand final.
Taking the silver medal was the men's third varsity eight in the Lois Krall boat. The three-V went straight to the five-boat final and rowed to a time of 6:27.005, finishing behind only Saint Joseph's. The bronze medal went to the women's varsity four in the Diane Corle boat. Racing in a deep category, the four raced to a time of 7:25.806, behind Lafayette and Wisconsin. The boat took a first-place finish in the semifinals Friday with a 7:36.574 to advance to Saturday morning's grand final.
The Dragons finished with three more boats in the top five. The men's second varsity eight took fourth in a tightly contested final with a time of 5:55.700 as Saint Joseph's went on to win. Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, it took second with a time of 6:03.083, edging third-place North Carolina by just under three-tenths of a second in its semifinal on Friday.
Finishing in fifth was the women's freshmen eight and men's second varsity four. Racing in the Marlene Buckley boat, the women's freshmen eight took fifth with a time of 7:19.616 as Saint Joseph's came away with the win. The men's second varsity four, racing in the LeBow College of Business boat, took fifth with a time of 7:01.049 to hold off Lafayette as Georgia Tech went on to victory.
Drexel advanced 10 boats to grand finals in total. The Dragons also sent the men's varsity four (Bella Santorum boat) to the petite final as well as the women's pair and men's freshmen four (Sandra Lee Sheller boat) to third finals. Racing was cancelled following the conclusion of the morning's petite and grand finals due to deteriorating weather and river conditions.
Drexel's women make a quick turnaround and close out the most important weekend of its season, traveling to the Cooper River in Cherry Hill for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships and a chance at a spot at the NCAA Championships at Mercer Lake. Drexel's men will have some time off from competition before closing out their season at the IRA National Championships on June 2-4 in Sacramento.
