PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel men's soccer team could not find a way to open its 2017 season with a victory on Friday night at Vidas Field, as the Dragons dropped their first game of the year 3-0 to St. John's. Drexel trailed by one for most of the contest before the Red Storm added a pair of late goals to seal away the road victory.
The game marked the Drexel debut for a number of Dragons. Martin Farias started and Strick Newsom came in off the bench for their first game action after sitting out the 2016 season. Meanwhile, Neil Boyal, Mathias Ebbesen, Laolu Daranijo, Patrick Murphy and Anthony Amore all found themselves in the starting lineup in their first game with the Dragons, while Chris Carroll made his debut off the bench. Boyal, Daranijo and Amore all registered shots on goal in the game, the only three shots on goal put up by the Dragons on Friday night.
Harry Cooksley led the charge for St. John's, scoring his first goal of the year in the 13th minute and following that up with a pair of assists late in the second half. He now has four points after leading the Red Storm with 16 last season. Alistair Johnston and Matt Forster scored the other goals for St. John's.
The Dragons were outshot on the evening 18-8. Despite allowing the three goals, Drexel goalkeeper Jacob Jordan showed flashes in net including an impressive close-range save in the first half that kept the deficit at one. He finished the evening with four total stops.
Drexel will get back in action next Friday when the Dragons host Bowling Green at Vidas Field at 7:00 p.m. The game will be the second in a three-game homestand to open up the 2017 campaign for the Dragons.
