Men's Soccer Falls Short in 3-0 Defeat to Bowling Green
9/1/2017 9:22:00 PM | Men's Soccer
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's soccer team dropped its second game of the season on Friday night as the Dragons fell to Bowling Green, 3-0. Drexel had several opportunities to even things up early on with the score 1-0, but were outdone by a second-half barrage of shots by the visiting Falcons.
The Dragons (0-2-0) faced a deficit very early on as Bowling Green (3-0-0) converted on its first shot attempt of the evening, a Moe Mustafa goal just under four minutes into the action. He benefited from a turnover by the Dragons deep in their own end. Chris Brennan took control of the loose ball and fed Mustafa for the close-range score.
Despite allowing that early goal, Drexel goalkeeper Jacob Jordan performed well, ultimately coming up with seven saves. He made a pair of stops on one-on-one attempts by the Falcons in the 28th and 30th minutes, keeping it a one-goal game. Jordan also came up with a third impressive stop four minutes later.
In the meantime, Drexel senior Erik Alexandersson gave the Dragons their first chance in the offensive end when he flicked a header in towards the near post that nearly eluded Bowling Green keeper Anthony Mwembia, but he managed to corral it as it bounced towards his hip. Fellow senior Tristan Thompson also fired a bullet in on Mwembia that the Falcons' goalie was able to reel in.
The best look of the first half for the Dragons came off the foot of Laolu Daranijo, who nearly converted the team's first goal of the year when he put a shot in from close range in a scrum in front of the goal. The ball looked like it might bounce over the goal line, but Mwembia managed to scramble back into position just in time to grab it before it crossed.
The second half started with more Drexel looks and, after the Falcons had led 9-6 in shots at the end of halftime, the Dragons evened that category up early in the second. That deadlock did not last long, though. Bowling Green began to pepper shots in on the Drexel end. Jordan did what he could, but a well-placed pass from Peter Pugliese found Mustafa for his second of the night in near to make it a 2-0 game in the 57th minute. Then two minute later, the Falcons provided the third score of the night when a Zach Buescher shot ricocheted off the post and found its way to Alexis Squahy, who poked it in. In all, the Falcons ultimately outshot Drexel 12-6 in the second half and 21-12 overall.
The Dragons will wrap up the three-game homestand that opens the 2017 season next Saturday, Sept. 1 when they host William & Mary. That game is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
