EASTON, Pa. – The Drexel field hockey team ran into a tough Lafayette squad and fell at Rappolt Field on Sunday afternoon, 4-1. The Dragons are now 3-3 on year, while the Leopards improve to 4-1 overall.
Lafayette scored the first four goals of the game before Drexel was able to find the back of the cage. The Dragons' goal came off the stick of Tess Horan in the 65th minute. It was her third goal of the season, and her third game in a row with a goal. Freshman midfielder Chandler McFeeley assisted on Horan's goal, the second time the two have connected for a score this year.
The Leopards controlled the pace for most of the afternoon, outshooting the Dragons, 15-5. Lafayette notched its first goal of the day at 17:14 of the first half off the stick of Grace Angelella, then just over three minutes later, Angelella scored again. Sam Di Maio assisted both of Angelella's goals. The Dragons would test Lafayette goalkeeper Sarah Park once in the opening half, but she turned away Megan Wiest's shot off the penalty corner.
Lafayette continued its pressure in the second half, notching goals at 51:50 and just over six minutes later at 58:00. The first was a deflection by Ellen Colburne off a long pass in from Audrey Sowers, while the second came off a deflection by Caroline Turnbull of the initial shot of the penalty corner by Lisa van der Geest. Despite Lafayette holding a commanding lead, Drexel continued to push and broke through at 64:45. Off the penalty corner, Horan deflected in the shot from McFeeley to make it a 4-1 game.
Park made two saves in goal for Lafayette, while Erin Gilchrist stopped four shots for the Dragons. Lafayette had eight penalty corners to Drexel's four. Lafayette had two green cards and a yellow, while Ally Chapis received a yellow card late in the second half.
The Dragons will return to action Friday night at 7 p.m. when they welcome neighboring Penn to Buckley Field as part of Philafieldhockey Day.
