PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the season with a 2-0 victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. Rookie Raenah Campbell scored for the Dragons early in the second half and then Vanessa Kara added an insurance goal with less than five minutes to play to help Drexel go 1-0-1 in its first weekend of CAA play.
The Dragons and Tribe went into halftime with the game still scoreless, but just under two minutes into the second half Drexel was able to break the tie and get on the board. Shaelyn McCarty tipped the ball in to Campbell with her head which allowed the rookie to head the ball into the top of the net from inside the box. The goal marks Campbell's second of the season.
Drexel was able to hold William & Mary off despite multiple opportunities for the Tribe. With just over 10 minutes to play, keeper Christiana Ogunsami made a diving, one-handed save to maintain Drexel's advantage. A few minutes later, the Tribe had another strong chance with a shot that went just high. As the Dragons continued to shut down the Tribe's attempts, Kara found an opportunity in the 86th minute and took the ball down the field herself. After beating two defenders, the junior standout took the ball in and fired it into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead. William & Mary was not able to retaliate in the remaining time, which allowed the Dragons to walk away with their first conference win of the year.
The victory marks Ogunsami's fourth shutout of the season. Drexel's senior keeper and William & Mary's Grace Smith each recorded five saves apiece on the outing. The Tribe edged the Dragons in shots on the game, 13-12.
With the win, the Dragons improve to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0-1 against conference opponents. The Tribe moves to 4-7, 0-2 CAA.
The Dragons will return to action next Thursday, Sept. 28 as they travel to face Hofstra in a road conference matchup. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
