Field Hockey Falls Friday Night to No. 8 Delaware

PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel field hockey team fell Friday night at Buckley Field to the reigning national champion No. 8 Delaware Blue Hens in the Colonial Athletic Association opener, 4-0. The Dragons are now 4-7 (0-1 CAA), while the Blue Hens improve to 7-3 (1-0 CAA).
The Blue Hens jumped on the Dragons early and took control with three first-half goals. The Dragons settled in the second half and held Delaware to one score after the break.
Talented Delaware freshman Lotte de Koning got the Blue Hens on the board early with a shot from the point on a broken penalty corner play at 7:00. Exactly eight minutes later, it was Lisa Giezeman in front off the feed from Ally Pollack. Then just over 10 minutes later, Michelle Thomas' tally off the feed from Lauren Crudele made it a thee-goal Delaware advantage heading into the half. The Dragons' defense settled in after the break and gave the offense some life. After Taylor Lister's goal in the 40th minute made it 4-0, Drexel tried to make its move. Following a timeout, Drexel was able to get Tess Horan, who made her return after missing last weekend's action, a look in front, but Delaware keeper Sydney Rhodes was there for the stop. Perhaps Drexel's best opportunity of the night did not make it into the stat sheet. Late in the second half, freshman Reilly Finegan found herself in perfect position in the circle to tip a long shot into the cage, but the slight deflection went unseen and the goal was deemed no good.
Again facing a high volume of shots, the Dragons were outshot 22-2 overall and 13-2 in shots on goal. Keeper Erin Gilchrist made nine saves. Delaware's starter, Emmeline Oltsman, played the first half and was the goalie of record. Delaware had 13 penalty corners to Drexel's one.
The Dragons return to action Sunday afternoon when they host the Bryant Bulldogs at Buckley Field at noon.
