PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team played Saint Joseph's close Sunday at Ellen Ryan Field for more than 60 minutes before the Hawks would ultimately pull away for a 3-0 win. The Dragons fall to 1-2 in the early season, while Saint Joseph's improves to 3-1.
Drexel hung with a strong Saint Joseph's team for most of the afternoon and kept itself within striking distance until the Hawks put two quick goals on the board late in the second half to put the score out of reach. Both sides took their time to find their rhythm on offense to begin the game. Late in the first half, Saint Joseph's applied the pressure, firing four shots on goal in a span of two and a half minutes, the final of which found the back of the cage. Off a penalty corner, the Hawks had a flurry of opportunities. Junior goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist was able to stop the first two shots, but Saint Joseph's Jordan Olenginski put home her first goal of the season off a rebound. The Dragons trailed 1-0 at the half.
At the midway point of the second half, Drexel had perhaps its best scoring chance of the afternoon. Following a penalty corner in the 54th minute, Tess Horan fired a shot towards the top left corner, but a defensive save by the Hawks kept the Dragons off the board. Nearly five minutes later, the Hawks again started to push the pace on offense, firing three more shots on goal. Gilchrist, however, would make three of her 10 saves on the day. Out of a Drexel timeout at 62:59, Saint Joseph's offense quickly tallied two goals 85 seconds apart to take control. At 63:55, Quinn Maguire notched her third goal of her freshman campaign off the feed from Anna Willocks, followed by a blast to the left corner by Emily Henry at 65:20 to put the game away. The Dragons would have two late penalty corner opportunities, but neither found their way by Saint Joseph's keeper Victoria Kammerinke, who recorded three saves en route to the 3-0 shutout.
Drexel shot six times, two of which were on goal. Tess Bernheimer and Megan Wiest each had two shots on goal for the Dragons, while Horan recorded the other. Saint Joseph's totaled 17 shots, 13 of which found their way on goal. Maguire led the way with seven shots, while Willocks added five and Henry had four. The Dragons had four penalty corner chances to the Hawks' two.
Drexel returns to action Tuesday night in its home opener at Buckley Field against Rider at 7 p.m.
