WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Drexel women's soccer team was edged by Monmouth on the road on Friday night. The Hawks scored the go-ahead goal with five seconds to play in regulation to earn a 2-1 victory over the Dragons.
The Dragons and Hawks were scoreless through the first half. Drexel was first to strike after halftime as junior Shaelyn McCarty found a loose ball in the box in the 60th minute and fired it into the upper 90 to put the Dragons ahead, 1-0. The goal marks her second of the season.
The Hawks retaliated in the 68th minute as Jessica Johnson fed the ball through to Lexie Palladino who put it in to even the score. The Dragons and Hawks were still knotted up at 1-1 as the clock wound down in regulation, but then with just five seconds remaining Monmouth's Rachelle Ross found the net to give the Hawks the advantage and ultimately the win.
The Dragons outshot the Hawks, 16-10 in the losing effort. Keeper Christiana Ogunsami recorded one save on the outing, while Monmouth's Amanda Knaub tallied seven on the night.
With the loss, Drexel moves to 3-4 on the year. Monmouth improves to 3-2-1.
Next up, the Dragons return home after a five-game road trip to host University City neighbors Penn on Thursday, Sept. 14. The game is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
