PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team walked away with a 2-1 victory over Penn as it returned home to Vidas Field on Thursday night. The game was knotted up at 1-1 with just over four minutes to play when senior Kiera Hennessy scored the go-ahead goal.
The Dragons led for most of the game after senior Madison Dunn got them on the board in the fifth minute. Wilhelmina Hauch-Fausbøll launched a corner kick into the box and Dunn was able to locate it amid the scrum and find the back of the net. Drexel would maintain its early lead for the rest of the first half and go into halftime leading the Quakers, 1-0.
Drexel continued to hold down its advantage through the majority of the second half. Penn was only able to retaliate in the 83rd minute as the Quakers' Allie Trzaska capitalized on a failed clear and put the ball past Drexel keeper Christiana Ogunsami. Just over three minutes later, however, Drexel took back the lead as Hennessy put away the game-winner off a corner kick from Vanessa Kara. The Dragons were able to hold off the Quakers as the clock ticked down and walk away with their fourth victory of the season.
The Dragons outshot the Quakers, 15-8 on the outing. Ogunsami recording three saves on the night, while Penn's Kitty Qu tallied a total of five.
With the victory the Dragons improve to 4-4 on the year, while Penn moves to 1-4-2.
Drexel will continue its home stand on Sunday as it hosts Villanova at Vidas Field. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
