PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel women's soccer team picked up a 2-1 victory over Villanova on Sunday afternoon. Shaelyn McCarty and Vanessa Kara scored for the Dragons to help Drexel to its second win of the week, both of which came against City 6 opponents.
McCarty got the Dragons on the board first in the 30th minute. Kylie Strong fed the ball into McCarty who made a quick turn and fired the ball into the upper right corner past a diving Villanova keeper. Drexel would maintain its advantage through the first half and go into halftime leading the Wildcats, 1-0.
Just over four minutes into the second half Kara was able to extend Drexel's lead as she took the ball in herself and found the net with a shot from just outside the box. The goal marked the junior's third of the season and 20th of her career, which ties for second all-time in career goals in Drexel program history.
The Wildcats were able to get one back in the 56th minute as they capitalized off a scrum in the box after a corner kick. Kristin Barbour found the ball off the rebound and tapped it over to Emily Kuefler, who sent the ball into the top of the net from close range. This made it a one-goal game with over 30 minutes to play in regulation.
Despite some strong attempts from Villanova down the stretch, the Dragons' defense was able to hold off the Wildcats to secure a 2-1 victory.
Drexel outshot Villanova, 15-9 on the outing. Dragons' keeper Christiana Ogunsami recored three saves on the day, while Villanova's Emily Harris tallied six of her own.
With the win the Dragons improve to 5-4 on the year, while the Wildcats move to 4-5 overall.
The Dragons will return to action on Thursday, Sept. 21 as they will play host to Northeastern at Vidas Field to open conference play. The game is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
