PHILADELPHIA – The No. 9 Drexel men's squash team dropped its 2018 opener in its first match back from winter break Thursday afternoon to No. 6 Rochester at the Kline & Specter Squash Center, 7-2.
Atticus Kelly and Mostafa Abouel Makarim earned the Dragons' two victories on the match. Bransten Ming and Noel Solomon each forced five-game matches, but could not break through in the end.
Kelly moved into the second ladder positon for the Dragons and took care of Tomotaka Endo in three games, 11-9, 12-10, 12-10. In the third game, Endo came back to tie it 10-10 after going down 10-5, but Kelly came back and ended the match with a beautiful cross-court shot. Makarim continued to solidify the bottom of the ladder, defeating Alexander Riedelsheimer at No. 9, 11-6, 13-11, 13-11. Ming was able to take a two-games-to-one lead on Lawrence Kuhn at No. 3, but Kuhn outlasted Ming over the final two sets for the 8-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-6, 14-12 win. At No. 7, Solomon battled back to tie the match after going down two games to none, but Numair Sani would come away with the win, 11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 9-11, 11-5.
The Dragons return to action Saturday afternoon when they head to No. 13 Navy to take on the Midshipmen at 2 p.m. Drexel will then rejoin the women's team in Philadelphia to host Franklin & Marshall at the Kline & Specter Squash Center on Sunday beginning at noon.
