CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – A program-best seven Drexel wrestlers placed and the Dragons finished sixth overall as a team Tuesday in the final day of the Southern Scuffle at McKenzie Arena in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Before Tuesday, Drexel had never placed more than two wrestlers at the Southern Scuffle. Its seven place-winners were bested only by reigning national champion No. 1 Penn State (10) and were tied with No. 6 Lehigh. Stephen Loiseau highlighted the group with a fourth-place finish and was joined on the podium by Garett Hammond (fifth), Austin DeSanto (sixth), Trevor Elfvin (sixth), Ebed Jarrell (sixth), Austin Rose (seventh) and Joey Goodhart (seventh). The Dragons amassed 77.5 points as a team to finish sixth out of 25 squads, their best team finish ever. Their previous best came last year when they finished 12th overall.
Loiseau fought his way into the 197-pound third-place bout with back-to-back wins over nationally ranked opponents. The redshirt-junior beat No. 18 Jacob Seely of North Colorado with a 3-1 decision before outlasting No. 14 Matt Williams of Cal State Bakersfield, 11-9 to move into the third-place match. There Loiseau found himself in a rematch with No. 9 Anthony Cassar of Penn Setate where the result ended the same way as the first, a 4-1 decision in Cassar's favor.
Making his season debut at the Scuffle, Hammond ran into a tough matchup with Mitch Finesilver of Duke at 157 pounds in the semifinals and dropped a 9-1 major decision. The graduate student found himself on the wrong side of a 14-11 decision against No. 17 Coleman Hammond of Cal State Bakersfield and moved into the fifth-place bout, where he earned a high-scoring 20-14 decision win over Navy's Zack Davis. DeSanto was the other Dragon to advance to the 133-pound semifinals. He was ahead late in the match against No. 4 Jack Mueller of Virginia before suffering an injury and defaulting the match to Mueller. A medical forfeit in the fifth-place bout slotted the freshman for a sixth-place finish.
Following a first-round loss, Elfvin battled his way through the consolation bracket all the way to the fifth-place match. In today's action, the freshman 149-pounder pinned NC State's Jamel Morris at the 5:45 mark before earning a 5-2 decision over Chattanooga's Roman Boylen. Elfvin then had a chance at the third-place match, but ran into Navy's Jared Prince, who pinned Elfvin at 4:31. In the fifth-place bout, Elfvin defaulted the win to Northern Iowa's Max Thomsen after sustaining an early injury. Jarrell continued to work his way through the 165-pound consolation bracket after a quarterfinals loss to top-ranked Vincenzo Joseph on Monday. After closing out a 9-4 decision win over Lehigh's Drew Longo, Jarrell was outlasted by Lock Haven's No. 8 Chance Marsteller, 10-5. In the fifth-place bout, Jarrell sustained an early injury himself against No. 19 Gordon Wolf to take sixth.
Rose shook off a second-round loss yesterday to wrestle his way into the seventh-place bout at 174 pounds. The redshirt-senior beat Navy's Spencer Carey with a 5-2 decision before dropping a close 3-2 decision to Appalachian State's Forest Pryzbysz. Rose took seventh after a medical forfeit kept he and Matt Finesilver from a Scuffle rematch of their second-round match. Goodhart took to the consolation bracket after falling to No. 5 Jacob Kasper on Monday and opened with a 7-2 decision over Demetrius Thomas. The redshirt-senior heavyweight then found himself in a matchup with No. 13 Thomas Haines, but Goodhart dropped a 6-0 decision to move into the seventh-place bout, where he received a medical forfeit from No. 12 Jacob Wood of Lehigh.
