PHILADELPHIA – The No. 9 Drexel women's squash team was narrowly edged Wednesday afternoon by the No. 8 Cornell Big Red at the Kline & Specter Squash Center, 5-4. The Dragons dropped to 5-8 on the season, while Cornell improved to 9-3.
Wednesday's match carried with it major postseason implications. With the win, Cornell almost certainly solidified itself in the top-eight and a spot in the Howe Cup, while the Dragons will most likely find themselves ranked ninth. The Dragons jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the match and had a 2-1 lead in the match at No. 2, but the Big Red ultimately came out on top.
Hannah Blatt, Ona Prokes, Fiona Power and Stephanie Ryan picked up wins for the Dragons. At No. 4, Blatt picked up her 10th win of the year, defeating Nghi Nguyen, 11-5, 11-5, 11-9. Prokes picked up a big three-game win at No. 6 over Charlotte Knaggs, 13-11, 12-10, 11-8. Power put together a huge comeback victory at No. 7 to defeat Madison Miles, 11-3, 8-11, 16-14, 12-10, 11-3. Ryan took Lucy Martin in straight games at No. 8, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4.
Ryan Morgan and Hayley Hughes each played exciting five-game matches for the Dragons, although they ultimately could not break through. Morgan took a two-games-to-one lead in her match against Margaux Losty at No. 3, but Losty battled back to hand Morgan an 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 7-11, 11-8 defeat. Playing at No. 2 with a 4-3 team lead, Hughes had a chance to close out the match for the Dragons. After dropping the first game, Hughes battled back to win the next two, but it would be Emma Uible who would outlast Hughes in the end, 9-11, 13-11, 11-7, 7-11, 7-11.
The Dragons return to action on Friday, Feb. 9 when they begin their final regular season weekend hosting George Washington at the Kline & Specter Squash Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.
