Ferguson's Hat Trick Friday Night Powers Field Hockey Past Monmouth, 5-1

PHILADELPHIA - Amy Ferguson notched the Dragons' first hat trick since 2014 Friday night to help power the Drexel field hockey team past Monmouth at Buckley Field, 5-1. The Dragons improved to 6-7 (0-2 CAA) on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 8-6 (3-0 MAAC).
Ferguson's hat trick was the first by a Drexel player since Rachel Sumfest scored three times in a 6-0 win at Bucknell on Oct. 5, 2014. It was also the Dragons' first hat trick at Buckley Field since Margaux Lourtie in a 5-3 win over Columbia on Sept. 2, 2011. Delaney Baxendale and Tess Bernheimer also added a goal apiece for the Dragons Friday night.
Monmouth took early control of the possession to start the game, but Erin Gilchrist came up with an early stop to keep the Hawks off the board. The Dragons broke through in the 16th minute on their second penalty corner chance. Puk Thewessen slid a perfectly placed pass to Tess Bernheimer, who had entered the ball then slipped to the post for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Less than three minutes later, Tess Horan dropped a pass to Ferguson at the top of the circle, and the Aberdeen, Scotland native blasted home her first goal of the night. In the 25th minute, Monmouth's leading scorer Georgia Garden Bachop halved the Hawks' deficit with a shot from straight away. A late defensive save by Katie Pappas and another stop by Gilchrist kept the score 2-1 at the half.
The Dragons' offense kept its stride in the second half as Drexel dominated the final 35 minutes of play. Just over 10 and a half minutes into the period, Ferguson knocked a beautiful backhanded shot into the cage for her second of the game to give Drexel a two-goal cushion again. The Dragons continued to apply the pressure on the offensive end. After three straight penalty corners, Drexel broke through on the final chance as Baxendale blasted a ball from just inside the circle off a defender's stick and in. Then, with less than four minutes left on the clock, Ferguson finished out her hat trick as she took a long pass into the circle from Horan, spun past the keeper and scored. With the game in hand for Drexel, Monmouth received a penalty stroke chance with 70 seconds on the clock. Gilchrist, however, guessed right, dove right and stonewalled the stroke to close out the 5-1 victory.
Monmouth outshot the Dragons, 13-9, overall and, 7-6, in shots on goal. Gilchrist made five saves, including the impressive penalty stroke save, while Katie O'Hogan had one save for Monmouth. Drexel had seven penalty corners to Monmouth's six.
The Dragons return to Buckley Field Sunday at noon to close out their five-game homestand and nonconference play against Temple.
