PHILADELPHIA - Puk Thewessen scored with 56 seconds left in the second overtime Sunday afternoon on Alumni Day as the Drexel field hockey team outlasted city rival Temple at Buckley Field, 2-1. The Dragons improved to 7-7 (0-2 CAA) on the year, while the Owls dropped to 2-13 (0-5 Big East).
After two huge saves by Erin Gilchrist with less than five minutes remaining in the second overtime, the Dragons flipped the field and earned the penalty corner. On the corner chance, Tess Bernheimer entered a short pass on the near side to Megan Wiest, then Wiest sent a pass across the circle to a waiting Thewessen on the right side, and Thewessen lined up a shot and blasted it past Temple keeper Cristina Carotenuto in the bottom left corner of the cage for the victory.
Both sides opened the game with scoring chances in the first 12 minutes that were turned away. With the officials allowing a more aggressive style of play, scoring chances came at a premium, especially early. Right before the half, the Dragons were able to break through on a penalty corner. Berheimer entered the ball, Thewessen collected the stop and blasted a shot from the point that was deflected in front by Emily Owens for the goal.
As the second half, began both teams again had early chances turned away. Temple, however, never let the deficit faze them and kept pushing. Temple earned a penalty corner chance with less than nine minutes remaining and capitalized. Kathryn Edgar sent in a shot from the point, and Becky Gerhart came diving across the play from right to left near the penalty stroke dot to get a stick on the ball and send it past Gilchrist to tie the game at 1-1. Drexel had quick chances to retake the lead with three penalty corners, but two saves by Carotenuto and a blacked shot kept the game tied. Temple would flip the field for a penalty corner chance of its own, but Gilchrist would make one of her season-high eight saves to send the game to overtime.
In the first extra session, Temple could not convert on its scoring chances. The Owls shot on the penalty corner four minutes in was blocked before their shot on the corner with just over three minutes left was turned away by Gilchrist. The Dragons were able to weather even more of a storm from the Owls in the second overtime. In the opening few minutes, Temple had three penalty corners, but Gilchrist turned away the one shot that made its way on goal. Still holding the possession nearing the midway point, Gilchrist made two point-blank stops in a scrum in front to keep the game alive. After clearing the ball, the Dragons brought the ball down to their offensive zone and got the penalty corner chance that would set up Thewessen's goal to win the final game of the five-game homestand.
Temple outshot the Dragons, 14-9, including 9-7 in shots on goal. Gilchrist made eight stops, while Carotenuto made four saves. Dani Batze made a defenise save for Temple. The Owls had 11 penalty corner chances to the Dragons' nine.
The Dragons hit the road for Colonial Athletic Association games next weekend at William & Mary on Friday night and Towson on Sunday afternoon.
