WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Drexel field hockey dropped a Colonial Athletic Association heartbreaker Friday night as the Dragons fell in overtime on a penalty stroke goal in Williamsburg, Va. to William & Mary, 2-1. The Dragons fell to 7-8 (0-3 CAA) on the year, while William & Mary improved to 8-5 (4-0 CAA).
The Dragons struck first on the night early in the first half following an early challenge by the Tribe. Coming up on 14 minutes into the opening period, Tess Bernheimer entered the corner pass, which Puk Thewessen then blasted towards the cage. Berneheimer, who had positioned herself at the post after entering the pass, as she has done so well all season, knocked in Thewessen's pass for her 10th of the season. Bernheimer is the first Dragon to reach double-digit goals since Megan Wiest (12) and Idrienne Walker (10) in 2016. Both sides would have its chances to close the half, but the Dragons would head to the break up, 1-0.
The Tribe challenged early and often in the second half and broke through less than 10 minutes in. After Tess Horan came up with a defensive save, the Tribe retained possession and Melanie Strik took a pass at the near post from Cara Menges on a scrum in front for the score to even things at 1-1. Following the goal, William & Mary did not let up on the gas pedal. The Dragons did not fire off a shot the rest of the second half, while the Tribe shot eight times, and all five of which that were on goal were turned away by Erin Gilchrist to send the game to overtime at 1-1. Gilchrist saved seven shots in the game.
In overtime, the Tribe's Annie Snead fired a shot that was blocked just over three minutes into the extra session. However, the Dragons were called for a foul in the box, which gave the Tribe a penalty stroke chance, which Christie van de Kamp buried for the win.
William & Mary outshot Drexel, 18-5, overall and, 10-3, on goal. The Tribe had five penalty corner chances to Drexel's one.
Drexel closes out its road trip Sunday afternoon at Towson at 1 p.m.
