HARRISONBURG, Va. – Freshman Morgan Rees and red shirt senior Kiera Hennessy scored late come-back goals to send the game into overtime as the Drexel women's soccer team was dealt a 3-2 double overtime loss against No. 4 Charleston in the Colonial Athletic Association quarterfinals on Friday afternoon at Sentara Park in Harrisonburg, Va. The Dragons conclude their season 7-7-5, 5-4-1 CAA.
Charleston got on the board early in the half when CAA Player of the Year Lauren Ortega finished a free kick from Raymara Barreto inside the six-yard box. Ortega collected the free kick from 45-yards out to finish the ball with one touch past Drexel goalkeeper Libby Baeza. Baeza, however, made two crucial back-to-back saves later in the half when she tipped a header over the net before stopping a low-driven shot inside the box to keep the deficit at one. With less than 10 minutes remaining in the half, Drexel had a chance to tie things up with a Hennessy header off a corner kick from Emma Heckenberg, but Charleston keeper Genevieve Henderson made the save to salvage the Cougars' advantage heading into halftime.
The Cougars doubled the advantage in the second half less than 10 minutes in when Ortega played a through ball into the 18-yard box for Maddy Brill-Edwards. Edwards received the ball with her right foot before touching the ball into the right side of the net for the 2-0 advantage. Despite the deficit, Drexel did not let down and cut the lead in half with Rees' third goal of the season. The assist was credited to Shaelyn McCarty who crossed the ball from the left wing into the middle of the 18-yard box where Rees got a head on it for the goal.
In the final minutes of regulation, the Dragons tied things up 2-2 when Hennessy scored her fifth goal of the season with an assist credited to Rees. With the ball at her feet, Rees played a pass on the ground back to Hennessy who fired the ball from outside the box into the upper 90.
The two teams continued to trade opportunities until the second overtime period when Charleston pulled ahead for the 3-2 victory. With 5:33 remaining on the clock, Ortega found her way through the backline to take on goalkeeper Baeza for the victory and her second goal of the match.
