Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Sweep Seton Hall in Home Opener

RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel men's swimming team set two new pool records while Katie Caputo and Hollie Hopf of the women's swimming team earned their first dual meet win against Seton Hall at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. The women's swimming and diving team defeated Seton Hall 184.5-109.5 and the men's swimming and diving team won 160.5-127.5.
 
Jason Arthur, Ralph Cannarozzi III, Paris Raptis and Stathis Malamas set a new 400 medley relay pool record clocking in at 3:22.77 while Cannarozzi set a new pool record in the 100 breaststroke. His time of 56.43 beat the previous record from 1989 (Lee Martin, 57.14). In addition, Raptis notched his first dual meet wins today.
 
"The team responded really well after our first meet, we had a great week of training and it showed today in our results with a number of personal best dual meet times," Head Coach Adam Braun said. "Really proud of how a number of individuals who didn't compete last week because of our depth responded today."
 
The women's team set the tone winning the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:52.59. The first-place team was made up of Alexa Kutch, Gabrielle Rudy, April Forsthoffer and Kaitlin Perni. The squad of Alicia Diaz, Megan Sicinski, Charlotte Myers and Hollie Hopf followed this momentum, earning a second place finish in 3:57.01. The men's team of Arthur, Cannarozzi, Raptis and Malamas earned first in the event while the team of Spencer Hill, Zachary Valenzuela, Joe Short and Andrew Zhugayevich took third in the event, clocking in at 3:30.05.
 
In the 1000-yard freestyle, Niki Fistrovic finished third for the women with a time of 10:50.17 and Patrick Cobb earned first place for the men, hitting the wall at 9:38.39.
 
Natalie Gundling and Dora Gercsak finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:56.53 and 2:00.20, respectively. On the men's side, Luke Hanner was the only Dragon to place in the top three, finishing second in 1:44.30.
 
The 100-yard backstroke belonged to Kutch and Alicia Diaz who took first and second in the event. Kutch finished in 56.23 while Diaz hit the wall at 57.87. Arthur notched another first place finish in the event with a time of 50.60 for the men and Rhys Kawaguchi finished third in 53.04.
 
Drexel women swept the top-three spots in the 100-yard breaststroke with Rudy, Sicinski and Sarah Cahill all placing. Rudy finished first in 1:04.48, Sicinski followed with 1:06.62 and Cahill rounded out the top three with a time of 1:06.99. Cannarozzi placed first for the men in 56.43 and Harrison Schultz finished third with a time of 58.55.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, Forsthoffer (2:07.51) finished first while Myers took home third (2:13.30) for the women and Raptis earned first place for the men in 1:50.90.
 
Hopf and Malamas earned second place finishes for the women and men in the 50-yard freestyle with times of 25.10 and 21.32, respectively. John Scully followed close behind for the men with a time of 21.56 for third in the event.
 
Caputo and Hannah Jordan finished second and third in the 3-meter dive with final scores of 223.88 and 216.45.
 
The women's team had two place in the top-three during the 100-yard freestyle and the men's team placed one. Gundling took second (54.28), Perni earned third (55.74) and Malamas finished in 46.72 for first.
 
Both the men's and women's team notched top-two finishes in the 200-yard backstroke, highlighted by Kutch, Diaz, Arthur and Kawaguchi. Kutch (2:04.99) and Arthur (1:50.61) finished in first while Diaz (2:07.36) and Kawaguchi (1:56.07) finished in second.
 
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Sicinski finished first in 2:22.30 and Becca Churchill earned second in 2:26.54. On the men's side, Zachary Valenzuela hit the wall at 2:08.26 for second and Cannarozzi notched a third place finish with a time of 2:11.44.
 
Jordan Washart (5:15.63) and Fitstrovic (5:17.98) finished second and third for the women in the 500-yard freestyle while Cobb (4:41.25) finished first and Dane Bell (4:44.53) earned third.
 
The Dragons notched four top-three finishes in the 100-yard butterfly. Hopf and Raptis took first with times of 59.12 and 50.63. Myers finished second in 59.26 and Dom Scifo placed third with a time of 52.15.
 
Caputo and Jordan earned first and third place finishes in the 1-meter dive with final scores of 252.07 and 211.95, respectively.
 
The women's team earned the top-three finishes in the 200-yard IM with performances from Rudy (2:08.71), Forsthoffer (2:09.47) and Diaz (2:12.85). Raptis was the only Dragon to place in the top three for the men, clocking in at 1:56.74 for first.
 
Drexel wrapped up the meet with two first and third place finishes in the final event. The team of Perni, Gundling, Courtney Levins and Kutch finished the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:38.83 for first while Corinne McCurley, Myers, Sicinski and Hopf finished in 1:39.78. The men's squad of Arthur, Dave Kneiss, Scully and Malamas finished in 1:24.75 for first and JonPat Ransom, Colin Kent, Alex Flynn and Zhugayevich finished third, hitting the wall at 1:27.48.
 
The Dragons will return to action when they travel to Baltimore, Md. For the Thomas Murphy Invitational on Friday, Nov. 2. At the invitational, Drexel will be competing against Loyola (Md.), John Hopkins and West Chester.
