PHILADELPHIA - A flurry of first-half action ended with James Madison coming away with a two-goal lead as the Dukes would go on to down the Drexel field hockey team Sunday afternoon at Buckley Field, 6-2. The Dragons fell to 5-7 (0-2 CAA) on the year, while the Dukes improved to 4-7 (1-1 CAA).
Six minutes after James Madison got on the board first in the opening five minutes, a flurry of three goals in two minutes saw the Dukes come out with an early 3-1 advantage. James Madison was able to grow its lead out to 5-1 before going onto the 6-2 win.
The Dukes opened the scoring just shy of the five minute mark, Rachel Yeager took the pass from the right side from Lindsay Gippe and past Erin Gilchrist. Six minutes later, Avery Powell found Tess Horan to even the score at one apiece. However, seconds later, James Madison took the ball immediately into the circle for Gippe to take the feed from Ongeziwe Mali to take the lead again. Then less than two minutes later, Courtney Lynch scored her first of the year off a pass from Elfi de Rooij to make it 3-1 Dukes. The Dragons called timeout to settle and swapped Kathryn Boyce in for Gilchrist at the 12:50 mark of the first. The Dukes would continue to pressure, but the Dragons responded to hold them off the board until Yeager snuck one past Boyce on the corner off a pass from Gippe with 98 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, James Madison wasted no time to get back on the board as Gippe again found the back of the cage 3:58 into the period to make it 5-1. The Dragons responded eight minutes later as Emily Owens took the touch pass from Chandler McFeeley at the top right of the circle and blasted one past James Madison keeper Caitlin Nelson. Re-energized, the Dragons pushed the pressure and earned six penalty corner chances in just over six minutes. Nelson and the Dukes' defense, however, came up with the stops they would need to keep the Dragons from getting any closer. With 6:51 left, the Dukes tacked on a penalty stroke by Phoebe Large, and the 6-2 score would stick the rest of the way.
James Madison outshot Drexel 13-9 overall and 9-6 in shots on goal. Nelson made four saves on the day, while Boyce made all three of the Dragons' stops. Both sides had six penalty corner chances. Gippe led all players with six points -- two goals and two assists.
The Dragons close out their five-game homestand next weekend when they host Monmouth Friday evening and Temple Sunday afternoon.
